My mother took me out once in a boat she was a partner in. I hadn't known until then that she kept sea lions out of her catch with a .270 Marlin, which was thoroughly illegal. This was 30 years ago.
The Coast Guard has many legitimate reasons for inspecting fishing boats, including for firearms.

One last thing, In the article Jones says,
"I wouldn't question their professionalism, but I do question their motive and their authority," he said. "To me, it sounds like something that an ACLU lawyer would just tear apart." He wouldn't question their professionalism. So it's apparent they were not rude nasty or the Nazis, not you, but some on this thread have suggested.
