Houston Mayor's Press conference

Posted on 09/24/2005 10:33:51 AM PDT by ark_girl

Houston's mayor and city officials just gave a press conference with regard to Rita. It was fascinating. Nobody yelled. Nobody cussed. Nobody cried. Everyone seemed to know what they were talking about and seemed as if they had spoken to the other appropriate officials before the press conference.

It was as if Houston had elected adults to run their city. Fascinating.

What will be funny is that Nagin and Blanco will win all sorts of 'leadership' awards from the Democraps while the folks in Texas will not get squat.

This post brings to mind the recent elevation of Honore, which leads me to my point: Honore wouldn't keep pounding the Old Media with "You're stuck on stupid! I'm not going to answer that!", if W didn't like it.

My guess is Scott McClellan would love to use that on the job.

I thought Sheila was going to announce the best looting locations.

Yeah, but that follow's Rush's principle....liberals LIKE failure. THe path to success in the Democrat party is to fail. The bigger the failure the better. Libs can't stand successful, competent people. Nothing new.

Houston - Space Center - Sheila Jackson Lee ????

- "Will they be able to see the flag we left on Mars" - S.Jackson Lee.

Only a fool would think she had anything positive to do with this action.

This morning on one of the early "news" shows, the little reporterette - don't remember her name - had two black older men, one of whom had been at the Super Dome and then evacuated again to Arkansas. Neither of them was the negative interview she clearly wanted. In fact, the guy who had been at the Super Dome thanked the Lord and also the Governor and couldn't say enough about how thankful he was for everything. She kept cutting him off rudely and digging to try to get the "right" response to SOMETHING at least. The only thing he was clearly aggravated with was HER.

A little later thay did manage to find a disgruntled younger woman at a shelter in Texas who complained that she was disappointed that the shelter there wasn't "organized" enough and she was having to actually WATCH her two kids herself, not much gratitude I heard at least for a cool, dry, safe place to stay for a while, water, food and a bed. The little reporterette and the whole anchor desk came back on announcing what a deplorable situation existed at that shelter and how they commisserated completely with Miz Congeniality. They couldn't even see just how transparent they were, or how silly.

Even Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (couldn't pass up a chance to be on national TV) was coherent and unusually well behaved. She even avoided criticism of other officials (except a mild rebuke of Centerpoint Energy for spotty electrical power availability.)

All in all, this was the anti-NOLA hurricane press conference. They didn't even need Lt. Gen. Honore to tell reporters to "don't get stuck on stupid." (although after the press conference, FNC's Brit Hume did commend officials for not needing to invoke reference Lt. Gen. Honore's famous quote to deal with the media reporters questions.)

when Sheila was on earlier yesterday they were asking her what they were going to do about the thousands of people stuck on the freeways and she immediately said that they were asking FEMA about that and didn't have a response...I think White and Lee dodged a bullet with the storm being so weak in the Houston area...the mandatory evacuation got way too many people scared and on the freeway resulting in a complete cluster.$%&k They should have only evacuated people in low lying areas and in sub par structures. Anyone in sturdy buildings and sound brick houses should have been told to stay home. A lot of people could have been seriously hurt by the "Mandatory Evacuation" plan.

Radio talk show host Neal Boortz said a few days ago: "I can tell you what will not happen in Houstom. There will be no looting, There will be no riots. There will be no shooting at helicopters and other rescuers."

Houston evacuated in an orderly way with only one tragic incident of the bus loaded with elderly people, which had nothing to do with the evacuation plan.

On wonders -- just what is the difference between Houston and New Orleans.

"Sheila was on earlier yesterday they were asking her what they were going to do about the thousands of people stuck on the freeways and she immediately said that they were asking FEMA about that and didn't have a response."

What an idiot she is, like she has to go ask someone else about an obvious question like this. They needed to (a) open up both lanes (b) get state troopers out there clearing up blockages and (c) get the media to let people know the traffic situation so the folks staggered their travel plans.

One thing I would have done was to simply turn off the car so save fuel, and to *not* use the declare evacuation routes but find a defferent way out.

Actually, despite the traffic problems, the roads were cleared by late Friday, which means anyone who wanted to get out could get out, as long as they had the gas. As the Governor Perry noted, he told people to make plans early get full tank of gas; some listened others did not.

"The mandatory evacuation got way too many people scared"

Understand that Rita may have been hyped but it was 3rd largest storm recorded in Atlantic hurricane history when it was in the gulf. It had the potential to be another Katrina, and thanks to God and a shift in the direction, it weakened in last 48 hours enough to be less devastating.

Houston took the right precautions; you cant predict weather to a T, and they couldnt wait until thursday night to figure out what to do. The evacuation proved that 24 hours is not enough, you need 2-3 days to move 2.5 million people.

This was a very successful evacuation overall ... if there was a cat 4 storm that hit houston head on, you would *not* want people there, even in 'strong' homes that would stand firm but then get flooded, and as of Weds night, that was a very distinct possibility.

Hats off to Judge Robert Eckels and others for doing it right.

Actually there's a great photoshop opportunity for someone to paste Sheila's face on one of those N.O. policewomen pushing the shopping cart through Walmart.
