However, the Ombud's op-ed does not necessarily rise to the standard of a retraction, much less an apology, and it's clear that officially, the NYT is standing by, that is, repeating the libel. In fact, it hurts the NYT's posture, since one of their employees is agreeing with the aggrieved party. Thank you...that was partly my point. What page was it on? And was it actually a retraction? Clearly it wasn't. The fact that Stanley's editor found nothing wrong with her statement--and clearly said so on the record--basically puts the Times in the position of standing behind it. This latest attempt at a "retraction with retracting" is no different that an Al Goresque apology of "I didn't do it and I won't do it again. It's meaningless and Jerry should continue seeking legal damages.
He finally has an opportunity to burn the Times' ass after years of criticism. I hope he uses it.

Beth, I don't believe that was written by a doctor. The education level of the writer is much too low.

If NY Times editor [sic] Byron Calame is right, then Times reporter Alessandra Stanley fabricated the story. If Times editor Bill Keller is right, then Times editor Byron Calame is lying. I don't see it that way. I see Cellar's response to Calamity as, "So, she made it up, so what?"
I wonder if anybody else sees it my way, or am I barking mad?

(Cause of "editor" confusion: Calame ="Ombudsman" but the Times invented neologism "public editor.")

Years ago my father was head of civil defense back home. We had a big flood that drove people out of a poor black neighborhood. They were put up in schools and other public buildings. He observed that some agency (Red Cross? Salvation Army? I don't remember) was operating a kitchen and feeding the refugees. He told me he asked why weren't some of the refugees put to work cooking and serving food. The reply was that there was no way to check them for disease, and they might spread an epidemic throughout the rest of the refugees. Made sense to me at the time. I suspect the volunteers at the Convention Center were following the same policy.

That is one lesson he never made sure Hillary got!
She had her own facts about his endorsement of her, what he said, etc. etc. etc.

What's the difference between a story the New York Times admits having fabricated and one they don't.....the admission.
