Polish conservatives win general election: exit polls

WARSAW (AFP) - Poland's conservative Catholic Law and Justice (PiS) reaped the most votes in the country's general elections, with exit polls giving the party just over 28 percent of votes cast.

Running a close second to PiS was the centre-right Civic Platform (PO), with around 26 percent, showed the exit polls, issued when voting ended at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT), showed.

The ruling Democratic Left Alliance (SLD), whose reputation has been damaged by a series of corruption scandals and an inability to bring down Poland's high rate of joblessness, did better than expected, pulling in a little over 11 percent of the vote.

Pre-election surveys had predicted the SLD would reap at most eight percent, and at worst not even the five percent required to get into parliament.

Fourth place went to Samoobrona (Self-Defence), with 10.21 percent, followed by the far-right League of Polish Families, with 8.32 percent.

If the exit poll tallies are borne out, PiS and PO, which have been in talks to form a coalition, would have 304 parliamentary seats between them -- 157 for PiS and 147 for PO -- or a majority of two-thirds.

The SLD would have 54 seats, Samoobrona 47 and the LPR 33.

Do they favor further consolidation with the EU? Do they favor withdrawal? Or less power to Brussels? Things like that.

Does conservative mean capitalist in Poland, though?

Do they favor further consolidation with the EU?
Absolutely not

Do they favor withdrawal?…
No

Or less power to Brussels?…
Definitely yes.

They present more or less the same stance considering EU as the Brits.

Thank you. It sounds like a positive step.

(just my own personal opinion, of course; it's not up to me to say what Poland should or should not do)

Basically yes.

However P&S presents some social leaning. Especially last days - when they wanted to attract as many voters, as they could. They started to spread horribly social BS (and it has brought fruits, as they won).

Formerly communist Poland rejects olde communism.

Formerly communist east Germany wants to keep communism. And has the numeric clout to shove it down the throats of all of Germany.

I wonder if the west Germans are happy about the (devastating) impact their olde communist cousins have had on their country?

A few here may remember Germany in the 60s and 70s was the economic envy of the world. Virtually no unemployment, increasing standard of living, many comsumer goods, etc.

The shortage of workers gave rise to the guest worker program, which opened the door to the musli hordes now descending on faire europe.
