CA: O.C. Race a Wild Ride - 48th Congressional District (Oct 4 Election)
Los Angeles Times ^ | September 25, 2005 | Jean O. Pasco

Posted on 09/26/2005 1:38:22 PM PDT by calcowgirl

For 17 years, former Rep. Christopher Cox (R-Newport Beach) represented one of the most Republican districts in Congress, after besting 17 other candidates. Now, 17 more are on the ballot to succeed him.

The result is a political free-for-all in coastal Orange County where candidates are struggling to capture the attention of District 48's 400,000 potential voters, including surfers and millionaires in Newport Beach, academics in Irvine and families in San Juan Capistrano.

Getting the most attention and campaign money are two well-known Republican politicians from Irvine: state Sen. John Campbell and former Assemblywoman Marilyn Brewer. ...

(snip)

The election, though, comes with a twist. All candidates will be listed together, and voters can choose any candidate, regardless of party. If no one gets a majority, the top vote-getters from each of the five political parties advance to a Dec. 6 vote.

The appeals to potential voters are many: American Independent Party candidate Jim Gilchrist of Aliso Viejo, founder of a group of volunteers who set up patrols at the U.S.-Mexico border, attended this month's GOP conclave in Anaheim and welcomed help from Republicans who support his stand against illegal immigration.

(snip)

And the state and county Republican parties, worried about Brewer's popularity among Democrats, swiftly passed rare pre-primary endorsements for Campbell. He also boasts an endorsement from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Both Campbell and Brewer have spent significant sums of their own money — $350,000 for Brewer, $250,000 for Campbell — to help fund campaign mailers, cable television advertisements and phone calls to voters.

Campbell raised an additional $550,000 through mid-September, according to federal campaign reports, with about $110,000 from conservative political action committees. Brewer has collected $230,000, much from women's groups and activist groups supporting abortion rights.

I have a rigid rule about never ever reading anything published by the LA Times. Other than your brief excerpt, this will be no exception.

Brewer is a NO because she's little better than a Rat, is a liberal and is endorsed by McCain.

Campbell is a NO because he's a RINO with a spotty record on certain issues, especially illegal alien issues. Although he's been endorsed by some people I respect (e.g., Tom McClintock and Jon Coupal), I just don't trust Campbell who imprsses me as another RINO a la David Drier.

At this juncture, I will be voting for Gilchrist as the probable best/only conservative running. I am presently trying to persuade our 8 other family votes to go with me. Won't be easy.

I used to be in this district but in the last redistricting the boundaries were moved. Now I am in a neighboring district. Campbell is a solid conservative who has fought the good fight against the entrenched Democratic Socialist party in Sacramento. He regularly appears on Hugh Hewitt's show and accounts for himself very well. The whole country would benefit from his election to the House. Brewer says she is a Republican but ,based on her history, she is what we call a RINO. She is really a Democrat but runs as a Republican because of the Republican dominance at the polls. Nancy Pelosi and all democrats would benefit if she is elected to the House.
Campbell is a superior candidate and Brewer is the opposite.

Thanks for the ping. The article was most interesting. I am one of those 15,000 who has already mailed in his absentee ballot.

Campbell may be all of what you say - still a fossil/professional politician.

When he was my rep all I saw were pithy mail surveys from him. Basically - no leadership, no connection w/ constituency....surprise - a professional politician

Where's tomorrow's Cal. GOP leadership ? no one under 50 interested/available ?...(& don't even suggest Spitzer.)
Their "cloaking Devices" must be fully engaged/operational.

Hey; You never know! There is always next year's race! This election is only for the remainder of the term (barely one year). They have to run for this seat again in 2006.

Gilchrist's party's liberal anti-war platform will not fly in the 48th District.

>>Gilchrist's party's liberal anti-war platform ...

Still spreading lies, I see--How many times do you have to be corrected on this?

You may need a new screen name.
Did you ever file papers to run for office?

Gilchrist's party's liberal anti-war platform

Same old lie, new day. It never ceases to amaze me what party hacks think is good strategy.

He regularly appears on Hugh Hewitt's show,

As does Hewitt's good buddy David Dreier. Maybe Campbell should be more selective with the company he keeps.
