Therefore, we only had a day or two for over one million people from New Orleans to Mobile to evacuate to "higher ground." Houston evacuated 2.5 million in 36 hours. Your buses were still in the parking lot when the storm hit.
Nagin............is that YOU again, Hon?

For years Louisiana Congressmen have been asking the federal government for money to help build stronger levees, but year after year
Year after year, they got money. And then they siphoned some off for themselves, and then they plowed some towards sham contractors (under do-goody liberal boneheaded community outreach programs), who in return kicked some it back to the Louisanna politicians in the form of campaign contributions and bribes.
The political system of New Orleans is a cesspool. Pump that mess out first, then look to rebuild.

Your post is so filled with mis-statements and outright lies that I don't even know where to start.
Your state most certainly did have over 5 days notice that a huge hurricane was headed your way.
Your state did not implement its OWN hurricane evacuation plan.
Your police are so corrupt that there are hundreds of policemen listed as being on the payroll who did not even exist! Listen to Tony Snow and learn a little.
Do you work for Nagin's office? Because you are certainly an apologist for the most corrupt city/state in the country.

I agree with some of your letter in the sense that the media did exaggerate the crime/looting/racism/poverty, but they did it to deflect attention away from liberal causes of same and onto Bush.

I'll feel more sympathy for you when in your next newbie post you address the numerous charges and statements about this entire thing being BUSH'S FAULT from not only the MSM but from practically every democratic leader right down to the slobbering rank and file stooges who almost broke their backs trying to pin this on the President.
In the meantime, go ZOT yourself.

You can't make chicken salad out of chicken poop. The full story of New Orleans/Katrina will yet be told but the demographics just don't support this analysis. A major part of the city is on public subsistence. The citizens seen on national TV were by in large these people. Those with jobs (like school bus drivers for example) also had transportation and left when it finally became evident to them a serious risk was imminent. Having lived in NO a few years and on the gulf coast for considerably more, it is clear adequate warning was given (by the media not the mayor) and the risk was extraordinary. Those New Orleaneans who thought this was a "here we go again" hurricane warning certainly aren't smart enough to be judges (lawyers maybe but not judges) and that may explain the general incompetence of the officials responsible for protecting the public in that city. The entire nation watched as Katrina grew to an enormous storm and it was clear it was going to hit SOMEWHERE along the coast. Anyone who has ever lived in NO is aware of the risk of the lake overflow and disaster to follow. The Levee board has for years squandered the funds allocated for Levee rebuild/reenforcement and now they complain about congress being unwilling to throw more money into the bottomless pit of Louisiana politics. This report is a weak attempt to dull the criticism of a failed political system. Nothing more.

Thanks for that and my prayers are with you. I am tired of all the NO bashing too. I have never been there and had a trip planned for Sept. 14. I have looked forward to it for years but it was not to be. Good luck for what you will find when you return home.

We did not have five (5) days notice of the hurricane hitting New Orleans. You had five days' notice that a monster hurricane was in the area.
That's sufficient.

You have my prayers.
And perhaps you can answer some questions I have as you or your husband is a judge....
In 1965 after Hurricane Betsy The Army Corps of Engineers developed a plan to stop the Storm surge of a cat 4-5 hurricane. Basically a scaled down version of the Netherlands dike system. In 1977 Environmental groups killed the plan in court.
See ruling of Judge Charles Schwartz DEC.30 1977 for the US District court Eastern District of Louisiana. And then tell me why you haven't gone back to court to get the project funded or have that ruling over turned. The mentality of the people down in N.O. is that "it can't happen to me." It did and now people are blaming the government for not funding projects that are stopgap at best. Tell me... why can the "Great State of Louisiana" only account for some 500,000 of 1.9 billions dollars sent to them in 2003 for disaster preparedness and homeland security.... As much as I feel for the people who are suffering from the damage wrought by Katrina..... I have to ask .... Did they not bring it on themselves by hubris and apathy?

By Saturday night, we were told by the weather service that Hurricane Katrina would most likely hit Monday morning. Wrong.
The NHC forecast Katrina to hit NOLA on Friday Night.
And you don't wait until the forecast is absolutely certain - because at that point, it's too late to evacuate everyone. Cities in Texas were issuing mandatory evacuation orders 60 hours before forecast landfall.
And what was Ray Nagin doing 48 hours before Rita's landfall? Figuring out the legalities of issuing a mandatory evacuation. Don't you think he should have worked that out long before hurricane season?
Give it up. Your town and state are run by corrupt hacks seeking to pin the blame for their abject failings on the feds.

Your local governments sure did a lot to help their own, didn't they? Where were all the buses? Instead of bashing Bush and the federal govt., your state should learn from Texas just in case this happens again. Welcome to Free Republic.

Thank you. As a resident of South Louisiana I appreciate your post. While our leaders certainly have their faults the attacks on not only them but New Orleans and Louisiana in the wake of this tragedy are just plain heartless and cruel.
As an educated person I simply choose not to respond to the morons that seem to dominate Free Republic these days. Some people think they know a lot when they really have no clue. There are still a lot of good freepers out there but there are also some that I have no desire whatsoever to associate with.
