Response from New Orleanian on The Accurate Tragedy of Katrina
9/26/2005 | Justice089

Posted on 09/27/2005 7:55:26 AM PDT by justice089

I WISH THAT THE MEDIA WOULD STOP GIVING THE PUBLIC INCORRECT INFORMATION. We did not have five (5) days notice of the hurricane hitting New Orleans. Katrina hit Florida and by Friday went back into the Gulf of Mexico. By Saturday night, we were told by the weather service that Hurricane Katrina would most likely hit Monday morning. Therefore, we only had a day or two for over one million people from New Orleans to Mobile to evacuate to "higher ground."

The issue that many fail to recognize is that there are several storm warnings that occur in the Gulf Coast each year during hurricane season. Evacuating the Gulf Coast each time a hurricane appears would be tantamount to forcing an evacuation of New York City every time a snowstorm is expected to hit. This is impractical. It would be disruptive to persons and businesses. Keeping in mind that much of this Nation's energy originates from the Gulf Coast - one can only imagine the crippling effect upon this Nation's consumers and businesses if we were to evacuate each time a strong breeze blows our way.

THE MEDIA seemingly has painted a portrait of New Orleans as a city of inept leaders and citizens that are poor and criminals. This is simply inaccurate. The rapes, TOTAL CIVIL UNREST and most crimes are not true. They were rumors and highly exaggerated by the media. People were looting, but people were also looting for water and food. The citizens of New Orleans are home owners, tax payers and hard working citizens who had to leave the city we loved. For years Louisiana Congressmen have been asking the federal government for money to help build stronger levees, but year after year, the funding has never been appropriated in sufficient quantities. Allocation of funding to protect the City of New Orleans not only benefits the City of New Orleans, but it protects industry in the United States on a large scale because it protects the oil and gas industry, the major maritime centers and major railway hubs located in the New Orleans region.

I am a judge and my husband is an attorney. We were fortunate enough to get out and had enough money to pay for hotels. I have not been to my home since August 28th. Some of the people you saw on TV may have been poor, but they were home owners and/or hard working people, who did not have the means to evacuate. They were not all criminals and THEY ARE NOT REFUGEES!!

Lastly, do not judge us or anyone until you have walked in our shoes. A natural disaster can happen anywhere. The people in Florida have hurricanes (more than LA, MS, TX or AL), California has threats of earthquakes, Kentucky has tornados, the North has blizzards and snow storms. New Orleans is our Venice of the US. When someone looses everything from their birth certificate, baby and family photos, everything that makes you who your are, if they are rich or poor, until you have experienced it, don't judge us, PRAY FOR US!

Even after reading your post I still feel that the federal nor state governments owe me anything and suspect that I will fend for myself in the event of a natural disaster.

Er ahh, judge.........Spell check can help with those big words, like lose. And I guess disasters can happen anywhere, but I'll not tempt fate by living in a bowl between two bodies of water, under corrupt politicians who take federal monies designated for protection from those bodies of water, and use it to sponsor southern decadence days and such stuff.

Welcome to FreeRepublic. The next time you go to vote, think a little harder about who you want your "first responders" to be... and leave the talking points behind.

Hardly. The difference between the two events is huge - and obvious to anyone taking just a moment to examine them. I've been in blizzards - in Colorado, in Illinois, and here in Tennessee. I've been through one hurricane, in Alabama - and even as a kid, I could tell the difference between the two.

As far as funding for the levees, the money was there. What did the levee boards do with it?

New Orleans is in our prayers.

Chicago east of Michigan Avenue is the debris landfill after the 1871 fire. Today, this landfill is some of the most valuable real estate on earth.

Pray New Orleans might wisely turn her lemons into lemonaide.

So does your defense of the officials stem from you being one of the said 'inept officials?'

Are you the author of this letter or simply posting it? In other words, is it hearsay, Judge?

Perhaps the skinny black line didn't land on New Orleans right away but then again, once the storm entered the GOM, preliminary plans should have been started, contingencies dusted off, arrangements made ... the intensity predictions for the storm were available 5 days in advance and to use your NY analogy, it is the difference in being prepared for a light dusting versus a nor'easter.
