NO deserves compassion, but not uncritical reaction to their behavior before the storm.

You are right. If a neighbor (whose a smoker) loses his house in a fire due to carelessly exercising his smoking habit, that homeless neighbor ia still worthy of our compassion. However, if that neighbor rebuilds -- not with insurance $ -- but w/ local govt. "bailout" funds + says he will still smoke in bed @ night...then his neighbor-taxpayers have a right to track the wisdom of funding a potential further fiasco...if not simply for their own benefit, then the safety benefit of this neighbor-at-risk.

Compassion that doesn't have the sanctity of life built in as to the future risk of residing in death-prone residential traps isn't operating in the best interest of those residents.

Of all the curious behavior shown by NO Mayor Nagin, not using the school buses for evacuation is IMO the most puzzling. There is a big story there that goes beyond stupidity. Political no doubt. I hope there is a good investigative reporter with the guts to ferret out all of the background regarding drivers, their affiliations and contracts and why there were none around when needed. We have read a lot in bits and pieces about the dysfunctional school board and the infighting in general among city officials but the whole story has yet to unfold.

New Orleans is our Venice of the US.

Minus the romantic allure, right? [NOLA,long ago a port haven for prostitution, exchanged "romance tourism" for open gay decadence festivals & jumpstarting endless "Girls Gone Wild" videos -- of which accompanying commercial saturation has bled over to corrupt the rest of our nation.]

one can only imagine the crippling effect upon this Nation's consumers and businesses if we were to evacuate each time a strong breeze blows our way.

Classic talking-points language: strong breeze?

Well, if leaders play down a potential hurricane long enough, then whadda ya 'xpect? Of course, 20-25% of local folks are gonna interpret that 'cane bearin' down on N'awlins as a strong breeze.

I am not insensitive to the situation of those affected by Katrina. However, taking you at your word, you and your spouse have the education to know that much of what you post is not actually factual. Throughout this country people have experienced the loss of all of the things you mention and there are millions of feet in moccasins that have tread harder ground than yours. The outpouring of aid from all sectors of this country is unprecedented. Such has not been the case for many other disasters. I can't see New Orleans making a sustainable case for rebuilding at the huge cost to the rest of the country unless her citizens first deal with the corruption and political shenanigans that have made a mockery of self government.

New Orleans is our Venice of the US.

Except that in Venice, the houses are actually above sea level.

Excuse me? So far there isn't anything to prove the author of the original post is indeed a victim. And the other poster agreed lockstep with them. NOW have YOU read through all the threads concerning this and discerned the truth as others have? And some of that truth comes from those that have been through the disaster by the way.

Apparently one who doesn't know proper english!

At the risk of sinking to your level, I just thought you would want to know that the word "English" is always capitalized. Apparently, there is more than one person here who doesn't know proper English.

As a Floridian, I think I have the authority to answer this inane poster:

1) Although hurricane forecasting is not an exact science vis a vis the track, the models were converging on N.O. by Saturday morning. That's 48 hours. You can move alot of people in 48 hours. Your esteemed mayor did not issue a mandatory evacuation order until Sunday--too little, too late! And knowing a significant portion of the population was dependent, did nothing to assist in the evacuation. He threw the poor to the wolves. If you choose not to beat feet with a Cat. 5 heading your way, you are irretrievably stupid or incompetent, particularly if you live in a bowl!!

Case in point: Last year, Hurricane Charley was forecasted to make landfall as a Cat. 2 directly into Tampa Bay. Evacuations were ordered (we moved more than 1 million) and those remaining hunkered down. Approximately 2 hours before it was due to landfall, it took an unexpected right turn into Punta Gorda. But you know what, all the counties north of Collier County had also issued evacuation orders as well. Category 4 Hurricane Charley caused significant damage but very little loss of life. Millions got out of the way, and the area is well under way to a complete recovery. Hmmmm...what's wrong with this picture? Oh, I know--proper planning and effective state and local leadership!!

2) But for the breaching of the levees, N.O. would have escaped significant damage. It did not suffer a direct hit and it was on the "weak side" of Katrina. If the significant amount of federal funding (why isn't the state taking care of this?) was actually spent on the levees without interference by the corrupt politicians and environmental whackos out there, they probably would have held and Katrina would have been a nonissue in New Orleans proper.

3) Although I sympathize with the loss of life, livelihood and property, I can't sympathize with anyone who lost important papers or photos. Those items are very portable!!! Everything else is replaceable. Obviously, everyone affected by these storms has my prayers and sympathy but you don't need to continue to spout liberal talking points when your points have been toally discredited by the FACTS!!! Sorry, "Judge"!

For years Louisiana Congressmen have been asking the federal government for money to help build stronger levees, but year after year, the funding has never been appropriated in sufficient quantities. Allocation of funding to protect the City of New Orleans not only benefits the City of New Orleans, but it protects industry in the United States on a large scale because it protects the oil and gas industry, the major maritime centers and major railway hubs located in the New Orleans region.

Excuse me your honor, but that statement is a lie. Louisiana has received more money for levee and flood control than any other state in the union. Unfortunately, your corrupt leaders have funneled it to pay for casinos and beachfront resorts rather than improving the levees. Go peddle your DNC talking points elsewhere.

It may be true that Louisiana has received more money than any other state for levee improvements and flood control but does that automatically mean that it was enough? The Army Corp of Engineers has ALWAYS requested much more than congress appropriated to do the job properly. I believe I read where they have consistently requested at least 20 million per year and Congress has appropriated about 3 to 4 million. Are you questioning the Army Corp of Engineers motives also?

I don't think the whole story will ever unfold..The news media and democrats are out to get Bush and have always been..The only way anyone will ever know is to read FR..

They hold these meeting to find out what went wrong over there in N.O. and they get Brown up there and ask him a question and he explains what went wrong and then they just yell him..The hearing are not for what went wrong they just want him up there and blame him for everything..

"Thank you. As a resident of South Louisiana I appreciate your post. While our leaders certainly have their faults the attacks on not only them but New Orleans and Louisiana in the wake of this tragedy are just plain heartless and cruel."

Well put. None of these opinionated buttheads have any idea at all how tragic this has been for so many honest, hard-working people throughout the region.
