Study: Immigration has slowed since 2001
San Diego Tribune ^ | Sept. 28, 2005 | Leslie Berestein

A surge in immigration to the United States that peaked in the late 1990s during the nation's economic boom has slowed since 2001, according to a year-by-year study of immigration trends released yesterday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

However, the nation's foreign-born population continues to grow. And as restrictions have curtailed legal immigration, undocumented immigrants have become a larger portion of the flow, in spite of increased border security.

Meanwhile, as the share of legal entries has gone down, the share of estimated illegal entries has gone up. Between 1992 and 1997, undocumented immigrants accounted for 38 percent of overall immigration; between 2002 and 2004, illegal entries accounted for 43 percent of the total.

This has occurred in spite of a decade of increased federal border enforcement, indicating that deterrence is counteracted by a strong economic pull factor.

The percentage of immigrants coming from Mexico has remained fairly steady at around a third of the total. Around one-fourth of new immigrants come from Asia, one-fifth from other parts of Latin America, and smaller percentages from Canada, Europe and elsewhere.

California's share of new immigrants has steadily declined since the early 1990s, according to the report. Where the state once received more than a third of all new immigrants, it now only receives a little more than a fifth.

Illegal immigrant are a larger % of the total, because the total decreased, but it looks like illegal immigration didn't increase in actual numbers, or the % would be larger.

Of course, having 40% of the immigrants come here illegally is way too many. We need to stop them at the border. Since the economy is the main attraction, the guest worker program would make sense, that way we could track them.

How could anyone MEASURE this? These people don't check in with a toll-taker as they sneak across our border...there is though, plenty of reason to think they are INCREASING in numbers as the Washington OPEN BORDER mob keeps talking about amnesty and a free-ride for illegal Mexicans...

Even 1% is excessive.

Why wait 4 years, pay thousands of dollars, and learn English when you can pay a coyote, sneak across, not have to do all of the above, and still qualify for the benefits of being on American soil?!?!?!

...smacks forehead, then shakes head ruefully...

Now that's strange...yesterday, there were a couple of stories posted about the Pew Reserach Center's findings that illegal immigration has increased over the past several years

Report: Illegal immigration has increased

Yes, I noticed, I am reading some of those now.

People are twisting the results. The article I posted appears to be accurately interpreting it.

Say we had 100 immigrants coming in, 38 are illegal, and 62 are legal.

Then the number of LEGAL immigrants goes down from 62 to 52, but there are still 38 illegals coming in. Now we have a total of 90 immigrants, but since that total is smaller, the 32 illegals are now 42% of the total, but their actual numbers didn't increase.

Some people present the increase in percent, as if they were an increase in actual numbers, which is not correct. So people who say that illegal immigration increased based on this study are not correct.

This doesn't make sense. How is it possible for "undocumented workers" (illegal aliens) to somehow get "documented" enough to show up in a statistical chart? Something smells here...

Remember, this is only an estimate. The actual number of illegal immigrants in your area may vary depending upon how close you are to a border and the time of day!

How could anyone MEASURE this?

They take a poll? "Yes, I am here illegally". Right! Hop in my truck and go for a little ride with me around some subdivisions where new houses are going up. Who knows, maybe we'll find some. Just a hunch!

"The percentage of immigrants coming from Mexico has remained fairly steady at around a third of the total."

Add in the illegal, and the number is 90%.

Can anyone verture a guess as to why the United States doesn't declare a moritorium on ALL Mexican immigration -- illegal AND legal??

Does the phrase "enough is enough" EVER strike a chord with any of the US Gub'mint?

Oh that's right -- Dubya Bush and the GOP thinks it's their new voting constituency, so I guess it's alright with them.
