House rejects naming California post office after Berkeley activist [Maudelle Shirek]

(AP) - WASHINGTON-House Republicans rejected a Democratic resolution to name a post office in Berkeley, California, after a longtime local activist and city councilwoman, saying 94-year-old Maudelle Shirek doesn't represent American values.

The 215-190 vote was an unusual refusal of an honor that's normally routine. House rules allow lawmakers to propose renaming post offices in their district, and fellow lawmakers usually agree without debate.

But Rep. Steve King, an Iowa Republican who led the opposition, said Shirek's background "sets her apart from, I will say, the most consistent of American values."

King gave no details in a speech on the House floor beyond citing Shirek's support for freeing Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted for the 1981 murder of a Philadelphia police officer. In an interview later he said Shirek had an "affiliation with the Communist Party," citing her sponsorship of the Niebyl-Proctor Marxist Library in Berkeley.

Rep. Barbara Lee, the California Democrat who sponsored the resolution, rejected King's comments as unsubstantiated innuendo.

Shirek, the granddaughter of slaves, is a prominent figure in Berkeley's left-wing community who has advocated for peace, civil rights and the elderly. She served eight terms on the City Council before losing a write-in bid for a ninth term in November.

SAN FRANCISCO - A Berkeley city councilmember committed civil disobedience and was arrested yesterday during a movement in support of a death row prisoner - a movement that has also drawn the dedication of Berkeley's vice mayor.

Councilmember Kriss Worthington was the first of more than 100 protesters who were arrested for blocking the sidewalk in a demonstration demanding a fair trial for death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Berkeley Vice Mayor Maudelle Shirek, 88, was also scheduled to lead more than 100 protesters to block the U.S. Court of Appeals in San Francisco, according to renowned black activist Angela Davis.

"Maudelle is one of the most amazing organizers in the country," said Davis, who was also arrested at the demonstration. "She's still on the front lines."

Shirek's aide, Mike Berkowitz, said Shirek thinks Abu-Jamal's pending execution could be likened to a legal lynching.

A true Marxist and radical liberal (excuse the redundancy) would have rescheduled the dental appointment and confronted The Man with her brothers in the proleteriat. I apologize for the length of this post, but this really got my blood up this morning...I posted this to the other thread on FR as well...

They had a half page article on this in the Sunday edition of the Boston Globe (I know...I know...I generally don't read it, but I needed something with my Bacon and Eggs...) I have excerpted the gist of their comments. I didn't post the link since you have to have an account to read it. I had not heard about this subject until today, but this was typical of the biased, slanted reporting we unfortunate conservatives in Massachusetts have come to expect from The Boston Fishwrap...

"The Des Moines Register expressed regret for twice endorsing King for Congress, calling his opposition to rename the Berkeley post office ''bizarre" and ''a petty, mean-spirited act of political retribution against a 94-year-old woman. ''Political vindictiveness doesn't get much more petty than that," the paper said in an editorial calling for challengers to oppose King next year."

Now, Massachusetts has the distinction of being the Eastern bastion of moonbat liberalism, with Madison, WI being the Central and Brekeley, CA being the Leftward or Western examples.

This just made me angry when I read it. I do not know what they are re-naming this post office from, probably some infantryman who gave his life in Korea or something along those lines.

But the point is, this is a federal facility. MY tax dollars are paying for it. I do not believe this woman should be honored in this country with my money, given her communist sympathies as well as her support for America's enemies around the world.

I am glad for them in Berkeley that they find her behavoir and politics admirable, and I say let them name every single road, city hall, parking lot, school, holiday, city roadway and senior center after her. I do not give a hoot if they name the entire city after her.

I do not want a federal post office named after her.

But back home in Iowa, there was a backlash. The Des Moines Register expressed regret for twice endorsing King for Congress, calling his opposition to rename the Berkeley post office ''bizarre" and ''a petty, mean-spirited act of political retribution against a 94-year-old woman. ''Political vindictiveness doesn't get much more petty than that," the paper said in an editorial calling for challengers to oppose King next year....''To say that Joe McCarthy is a hero is frightening and shocking," said Lubin, who said Shirek, a registered Democrat, is no communist, despite her nominal connection to the Marxist library and the fact that she once had dinner with Cuban President Fidel Castro.

I view their statements as a slander against Joseph McCarthy, who is, and should be considered a true American hero who gave his life and reputation in defense of his country, something those anti-American POS in Berkeley don't understand.
