Yes, same here. ;-) And I have a two-year old granddaughter who could run rings around all of 'em. Hope all is well with you, mystery.
***I still don't know what a patrician person looks like. How do you tell a patrician looking person from a nonpatrician looking one?***
Good morning, Tom.
The dictionary gives a rather stuffy explanation, doesn't it? LOL!
<<< a person of refined upbringing and manners <<<
Well, you can't really tell by looking, can you? In Mrs. Roberts' case there's an immediate sense of "she looks like a lady." But we all know that looks can lie.
I based my comment on both looks and behavior. I was impressed by how she handled herself when that adorable little rascal, Jack, did his dance for the audience. She looked concerned, but stood where she was and honored her husband's moment of fame. As any mother can tell you, that takes real composure. And real composure comes from good upbringing.
But, what the heck, unless you know a person well, it's only a guess.
By the way, how's Tony?
What great looking couples. I LOVE the one of the Cheney's. Looks like she just said something really funny to him and he's not only laughing it looks like he is trying hard not to BUST OUT LAUGHING. They are sooooo cute. Rummy and his wife are cute too. Of course, the Prez and First Lady are great. Thaks for those extras. Appreciate any and all photos of all of these great people.
This might help, as visuals often do more than words. So imagine a picture of these people compared with one another where two names are listed in apposition (not that I am talking up all those in the Patrician list as role models for Americans), or consider individuals singly when no one is opposite.
Patrician......................Nonpatrician
Jane Roberts................Hillary Clinton
Jacqueline Kennedy.......Sheila Jackson Lee
Billy Graham................Jesse Jackson
George Washington.......Huey Long
................................. Aristotle Onassis
..............................,,,.Bill Gates
Laura Bush...................That ketchup Heiress
...........................
It denotes an air of self-confidence rather than pride; it can involve being descended from families that have been successful in their personal and professional lives, but not always; to wit: Frederick Douglass, the slave who bought his freedom and educated himself, becoming a firebrand for Negro liberty and rights during and following the Civil War.
Re-reading my post, I would add to the characteristics of patricians: great personal dignity and bearing, elegance, humility, often (but not always) eloquence. They are people one notices focally in a room. They do not go unnoticed in a crowd, yet they do not seek to attract.
