I was the ultimate seeker.I wanted to sample everything that was happening back then.I became very disillusioned by both the Right and the Left but I think the Left's betrayal hurt me the most. You see,I EXPECTED more out of them. They promised so much and delivered so little.

I had a colleague who was a committed Marxist. The guy was not evil, he sincerely believed this was the way to better mankind. I had to admire the good he wanted to achieve but I refused to challenge his political beliefs since he somehow thought this was the ultimate intellectual achievement. I hope he was smart enough to learn from experience.

I knew people who had escaped from Communists in Cuba, lived in Nazi occupied France, survived the Civil War in Spain and lived under the Caudillo's regime so I had no illusions about the far right or far left. Shrill ideologs and screamers seldom have any truth to impart.

It's crazy isn't it? What I don't get either is that many Jews in this country are liberal, whereas in Israel they are much more conservative. Democrats have and will never support anything in Israel's favor.

True, I wasn't there in the 60s of course, but I was in grade school in the 80s. I can remember doing things which today I'd be arrested for. IE: playing with toy guns at recess, smacking a girl's behind (I was young, though today I'd still like to do this sometimes) and, OH MY GOSH, getting in fights.

I think whatever music was popular when one was in high school is believed to be the best music.

Truer words have never (well, almost never) been spoken! I still listen to and enjoy late 70's and early 80's music. Music is just the background noise of events happening, it does not drive events.

If you even THINK of doing ANY of those things now,the THOUGHT POLICE will swoop down on you and arrest you!

Yes,the down to Earth conservatives who represented the best of America were the ones I respected-people like Reagan,Goldwater, etc.People with values and integrity.People who believed in hard work and would reward you if you worked hard yourself.
Contrary to what you might think,I knew some good people on the Left. They were NOT the ones running the whole sordid show, however. Many of those were good people who felt that the people who were in power at the time had forgotten the true spirit of America. The leadership cynically expolited them and then ran off to get filthy capitalist rich!
Example-I was at a workshop in Berleley in 1969 where Tom Hayden gave a lesson on gun use to defend against"the pigs and right wing vigilantes".How were we to know that fifteen years later Jane Fonda would break him off ten million in their divorce settlement?.
Some Communist HE was!

During the 60s my family lived near Sunset Strip, Los Angeles, which contained many famous nightclubs for 60s rock & folk singers. It also became a hippie hangout.

One day my parents went to the local gas station, where my brother was enjoying his first job pumping gas. While they were there, a hippie came up and asked my parents for spare change.

Furiously my mother leaned out of the car and screamed, "My son is there pumping gas. Why don't you go out and get a job like him?"

The hippie stiffened and answered, "Madame, I beg for my living."
