Able Danger: Strip Tease [Going After The Whistle Blowers Alert]
Captains Quarters ^ | Sept. 30, 2005 | Edward Morrissey

Posted on 09/30/2005 5:28:19 AM PDT by conservativecorner

Col. Tony Shaffer has had his security clearances revoked by the DoD and have officially notified his attorney of the circumstances surrounding the revocation. Although it does not technically affect his membership in the Army reserve, the action effectively ends the career of the former DIA liaison to the Able Danger project. Shaffer cannot pursue his specialties within the Army or DoD without security clearances.

So what led to the revocation of Shaffer's clearance -- his whistleblowing to Congress or his interviews with the press on Able Danger? No, that would look too direct. The Pentagon gave this list of incidents to Mark Zaid, Shaffer's attorney, who then released it to the press:

Shaffer says he received a Bronze Star medal for work on a classified operation in Afghanistan in 2003. According to papers provided by Zaid, the military is now questioning whether he deserved it, including challenging whether at least one person who backed Shaffer's nomination for the medal had firsthand knowledge of his actions. Shaffer says he showed his government credentials during two incidents in 1990, when he was drunk, and 1996, when he was pulled over by police. The military says he misused his credentials, but Shaffer says he was not told he should not have used them. He also said he has joined Alcoholics Anonymous and has been sober for 13 years.

As for the pens and other office supplies taken, he blamed that on "youthful indiscretions" more than 20 years ago.

According to the paperwork, the alleged infractions against Shaffer also include:

• Falsely claiming $341.80 in mileage and tolls fees. He said he filed travel expenses based on what he was told by human resources staff.

You really have to wonder if this is a cover up or a cya. I bet a majority of the nation doesn't even know this exists. Sad.

The real reason he's down is that he appeared to be a threat to the Clinton steamroller.

But Clinton is no longer in power. When GWB was elected I thought we were done with this type of cover up crap. It seems I was mistaken.

I tried to tell my brother about Able Danger and that it was a cover up by the Clinton Administration, my brother never even heard of Able danger.

it was a cover up by the Clinton Administration,

It was.

Now it sure appears to be a cover-up by the Bush Administration.

We should blame Clinton for what crooks in his administration did. But Clinton hasn't been in office for a long time.

If the Bush Administration isn't supporting this cover-up, Rumsfeld should broom the DoD and restore this man's security clearances. If he doesn't, then this Administration is an equal part of the Able Danger cover-up.

I doubt Bush even knows about it. This is DOD people covering themselves.

Able Danger is quickly going the way of Jayna Davis's 'Third Terrorist' in the OKC bombing.

Rumsfeld knows. If Rummy doesn't know everything that's been going on with Able Danger, he's derelict of duty. The DoD stripping a huigh-profile national security whistleblower of his security clearances is worthy of the Secretary's attention.

But let's say that Rumsfeld didn't know beforehand. He's a busy guy, lots on his plate, we'll cut him some slack.

But Rumsfeld ceratinly knows now. So he'll launch into action today, right, and kill the cover-up? What shall we think if no action is taken?

And just as a follow-up, once Rumsfeld knows about the cover-up, I expect him to tell the Commander in Chief about it.

If Bush didn't know before, he knows now. Waiting for the Administration to stop the cover-up....

I'm starting to think that it would be A-OK with the Bush's & the Clinton's to divide the political spoils in this country -- alternating control of the White House every 8 years? Just how else do you explain the GHWB/WJC road show? There's certainly some personal animosity there, but both families go further politically by playing off the other side.

This kind of dynastic politics is not healthy.

"....the alleged infractions against Shaffer"

This is a complete joke. The guy gets his clearances pulled for trivial personal problems related to alchohol, and taking office supplies, WHEREAS Sandy Burgler will get his clearance back in just three years after STEALING and DESTROYING Classified information.

This is becoming ridiculous. Berger gets a pass and Shaffer gets hammered. I wonder who will be the first to equate Shaffer with the famous " $100 bill through a trailer park" scenario.

"Berger gets a pass and Shaffer gets hammered."

With this lack of Honor and corruption in the National
Security community, it's no wonder that nobody wants
to serve in the Armed Forces anymore:

Welcome to the club. Freepers droned on endlessly how GW was going to set aside all those stupid EO's that Billy signed at the last minute. In the end they all quietly took effect.

Do we even know today, for a fact, one way or the other that the childish Clinton team trashed the White house?

GW has foolishly resurrected Billy by tasking him along with his GHWB to be a fund raiser, then having Billy bite him in the @ss.

Super Secret, Super Genius plan number 123,654

Can't wait to see the next Supreme Court Nominee presented.<(•¿•)>

Gee, now if all these things are so bad, then why wait till now to punish them? Since they weren't punished at the time, isn't this negligence on the part of the military? I also wonder why, if these things were so bad, he was promoted to Colonel. Looks like more negligence.

I'd say his superiors were derelict in their duty if stealing pens and flashing badges were truly offences worthy of revocation of his security clearance, especially on something like Able Danger. They should be court-martialed for such a lapse in national security, if indeed these offenses meant Col. Sheaffer shouldn't have had security clearance.

It's obvious they drug up anything they could to revoke his clearance, it's so transparent it looks like an old Clinton hatchet job. The Pentagon is trying to bury this, pure and simple.
