I don't know if your Catholic, but a Mass Card for the mother would help her condition. It's helped the people I prayed for and I'm sure others can give witness to this fact. Lighting a candle in Church helps, but a Mass Card is like prayers on steroids (without the nasty side effects).

Hopefully, if your sister-in-law really does have specific problems, she will accept help. There are definitely times when the mother is not the best care-giver and this should never be assumed.

Special prayers for your brother. This has been tough on him and will continue to influence how he looks at the children's mother. He will need God's special grace to be firm in keeping the chilren safe while still having Christian charity toward the mother. Not an easy job.

Of course you have my prayers. Many FReepers prayed for me when I was in a bad way. The least I can do to show my gratitude is offer up my prayers for those in need.

This is my understanding of the Mass Card.

I think that Mass Cards extends from both prayer notes Jews put in the West Wall, but also an ancient Roman tradition of placing "good bye" letters with corpse prior to their burial. Sometimes the letters were angry notes asking the dead person, now a spirit, to inflict revenge upon the writer's living enemies. But today's Mass Cards are superior in intent.

You can get two types of Mass Cards: for the deceased, or for a special intention. The special intention can be personal for for a friend...or even and especially for someone who gives you a hard time (remember that Jesus wants us to pray for our persecutors). The importance is that the priest lays your prayer request, and/or the name of those you want to pray for on the altar so that not only the congregation, but Jesus, Himself prays for your intentions.

How can God the Father refuse anything from His Son? HOW?!?!?

By Canon Law, a Church can only charge so much for the Mass Card (which basically covers the cost of the printed cards, they're usually very beautiful). Some Churches offer a mail order on-line service if there is a particular devotion or mission that you like.
