What are the effects of pouring drain cleaner into ones nostrils?
Should we enact a new level of law enforcement to prevent such behavior?
The whole debate boils down to if the people are responsible for a limited government, or should the government be responsible for everyones actions?
Pot use is just as stupid as pouring drain cleaner in ones nostrils. I don't give a damn if someone chooses to, when the alternative is a police state. Those who make their living working for the police state will disagree, but what the hell, it's a heck of a gravy train.

You will not reduce the use of recreational substances by lying about them. It has already been tried and the result was loss of credibility for those who tried it and in all likeihood an increase in youthful use.

And we'll get the job done, even if it takes ever right, freedom, and dollar we have. Someone, somewhere might be getting high right now!
Our founding fathers, were they here today, would demand that we use every resource available to keep that from happening. Even lies and tyranny.
I think if the founding fathers were here today, they would see the type of civilization we live in and the density of the population and would tell you to grow up.
You are not living in the open ranges of the 1700's anymore and everything you do can also fall upon your near by neighbors or the state and national treasury.
Our founding fathers were not gods and life has gone on in America since those wonderful men have passed. They gave us a wonderful foundation on which we are still building a great country (recreational drug use not inculded).
Your ridiculous with your money argument regarding illegal drugs as you would in not wanting to spend money in murder, which takes investigations, court time, jail and can often be tied to drugs as well.
Perhaps you should think about giving up the adoration of recreational drug use or pro-recreational drug use politics and take up fishing.

So much for the "Gateway" Theory. It's more of an "Open-Door" Policy, in practice.
Personal liberty has been replaced by a collective liberty to act out society's whims in the minds of those who fetishize the State.
The WOD is simply a leading aspect of enforcing what is essentially "Socialism with American characteristics", to paraphrase Mao.

"Be ready for the flames coming your way that will portray you as a Storm Trooper, Facist and the like...." Ironically enough, the overwhelming majority of name-calling, ad hominem insults and juvenile antics come from the "anti-drug" crowd.
This thread is evidence enough of that.
But for those who are skeptical, there are thousands of other threads just like it, and all of them illustrate the truth of this debate.
And the truth is that those who resort to name-calling and personal attacks do so because they are afraid.
What do they fear?
The truth.

It is NOT a conservative behavior IMO to be pushing recreational drug use.
Pushing?
NO.
Families and social leaders should discourage drug & alcohol experimentation by minors.
However, the government needs to butt-out when it comes to the choices made by adults regarding what they may or may not choose to consume.
Personal liberty IS a conservative objective.

We need family, work and maybe even oil to fuel this engine of DemocracyWhy would we, who are supposed to be living in a Republic, want to 'fuel' democracy?
It is NOT a conservative behavior IMO to be pushing recreational drug use
Having never used what is now considered illegal drugs, I don't want to push them on a soul. And yet, I continually find it humorous that 'conservatives' would advocate a national program of any sort that was not originally envisioned by the Framers. Did they not have access to marijuana? And somehow they either abstained or used accordingly. Either way there was no national program wasting government money on something like the WOSD. It is a more conservative value to advocate as little as government as possible. However, I understand partisans are more concerned with their pet projects (WOSD, NASA, Social Security, etc.) than with the values of conservatism.
We can do very well without the drugs and I think Bennetts comment about crime
You could do without the crime and you think without Bennett's statement? That statement just further shows that Bill Bennett is an absolute idiot. While I would not desire any government action, federal or state, for his idiotic statements I would hope the market reaction would force the stations employing him to fire him ASAP

I completely agree with you. Our society as a whole should frown on drug use because, by and large, it is detrimental to one's health and character.
However, I have yet to see anyone seriously get on this website and advocate drug use of any kind. What we normally see in these drug war threads is the objection by a great many conservative people to the heavy-handed and blatantly unconstitutional tactics used to enforce anti-drug sentiments. Regardless of the intentions behind them, illegal actions by our government should not be tolerated by anyone who calls himself conservative.
What many fail to see here is that objecting to the unconstitutional lawsand tactics used in the federal drug war is not the same thing as advocating drug sue. Just because I am against allowing federal agents to kick in citizens' doors in the middle of the night or freezing people's assets without due process doesn't mean that I'd like to see our kids getting stoned in the playground. It just means that I think using the federal government, in direct violation of the limits placed upon it by the US Constitution, to prevent personal vices is to trash every ideal upon which this country was founded. Furthermore, if we allow the federal government this much power for the drug war, what is to stop them from exercising that same power for any reason they see fit?
We are either a Constitutional government or not. If you want to federally ban drugs and give the federal government the power to enforce that ban, then get an amendment in place as they did for alcohol. Otherwise, regardless of your intentions, you are merely advocating the abolition of COnstitutional government in the US.
