Owen is out Sep 30 2005 12:42 PM

By TimChapman

According to a very reliable source close to the White House vetting process for the next nominee, Priscilla Owen has withdrawn her name from the process.

With Owen out, conservatives have lost one of the better women on the short list.

Stratfor had an interesting newsletter his morning about Presidents failing when they lose their base.

This may help the explain the extreme pressure from the Left for a "moderate", since they know that would alienate the President's core supporters and pretty much invalidate his presidency for the next 2.5 years.

I don't think he'll take the bait. The press will have a field day with another conservative and paint the Prez like he's Genghis Khan. I can hardly wait.../sar.

IF this story is true, she didn't "take herself of consideration". She would have done that long ago.

She was ASKED to take herself out of consideration.

And the only reason she would have been ASKEd would have been to deflect conservative ire for having another person, who could only be moe liberal, named.

But we shall wait and see.

McCain-Feingold, Alberto Gonzales, illegal aliens, assault rifle ban, all reasons to make me very nervous about Bush.

In polite society, people are not fired. They get the hint they are no longer welcome, and submit resignations. People are not turned down for jobs. They decline to be considered for the position.

I agree, Princess. And I wouldn't blame her one bit if she said being dragged once through the freak show of the Senate Judiciary Committee was quite enough. Owen sits on a distinguished court and can enjoy her judicial career.

Number One-

The President has already chosen his candidate. I sincerely doubt his chosen candidate is one that would withdraw right before the announcement.

Number Two-

Owens was never among the list of people I would be excited to see on the Court, nor do I ever believe she was legitimately in the running. Oh, I'm sure she is a good Judge, but thre are better.

Number Three-

I look forward to the President's announcement as soon as possible to spare the lame predictable attacks made time and time again in circles prior to the nomination. I am also looking forward to the National Enquirer "conservative" outlets being disproven again.

Agreed. If you aren't willing to walk through fire, best to get out now.

JOHN ROBERTS' INNER THOUGHTS:

"Hello liberals. I'm John Roberts. Excuse me. I'm Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. I'm 50 years old. President George W. Bush nominated me, the 'practicing Catholic' who likes the Constitution, not international law. Look at this face. Get used to it"

Cantero has the conservative reputation, but I remind you that he joined the liberal nutcases on the Fla. Supreme Court in throwing out Terri's law.

That law had a lot of problems, the most significant of which is that it applied only to Terri. Special legislation is not favored. On the other hand, the logic that the court used in throwing it out was pretty stupid I thought. Their logic was that it was an infringement on the role of the judiciary. Since when does the judiciary get to decide whether to pull the plug on a hospital patient free of any constraint by the legislature?

I sure hope he doesn't agree with the court's logic on that.

Three Roman Catholic (or if I might use the semi-derogatory, but deliciously funny term "mackeral-snappers") on the supreme court? Wouldn't the left just have a fit?

Not Qualified Due To Deeply Held Personal Convictions!

I hope the nominee has fangs. Long and sharp. Rip them all a new one.

Edith Jones or Brown would do nicely.

My bet is that Bush will nominate a strong conservative. He will not leave a legacy of not moving the court to the right. He learned a lesson when his old man picked Souter. When he picked Roberts he had all the pundits befuddled.

We already have four papists Robers, Scalia, Thomas, and Anthony Kennedy.

Just don't tell anybody.

Priscilla Owen does not like the liberals that are being put on the short list, so she withdrew her name because she did not want to be associated with them, reliable sources have said.

. . . and I am a relaible source.

Why all this guesswork? Luttig, Jones and Brown are out there. JUST DO IT!

Does anyone know when the President's going to announce the nominee? I can't wait! This is better than Christmas morning...
