PRESS RELEASE
September 28, 2005
Statement of the International Freedom Center
We are deeply disappointed that the will could not be found to continue the development of the International Freedom Center at this hallowed site. It is the site for which the IFC was created-at the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation's request, and as an integral part of Daniel Libeskind's master site plan. We do not believe there is a viable alternative place for the IFC at the World Trade Center site. We consider our work, therefore, to have been brought to an end.
We are profoundly sorry to see:
This significant blow to the idea of a living memorial that emerged from a comprehensive public process; The loss of a museum of freedom at the place where freedom was so brutally challenged; The failure to accept the offer of nine great universities to offer cultural programming on freedom issues in the heart of Lower Manhattan; and This setback to one of the most ambitious and promising service and civic engagement programs in this country.
Hundreds of people contributed to the IFC's development, including some of the world's best thinkers on the subject of human freedom. To all these people we offer our profound thanks for their hard work over the past four years. Freedom is humankind's greatest, most ennobling idea, and its surest antidote to terror and tyranny.
Finally, we wish those still involved in the important work of creating the Memorial the best of luck in the months and years ahead.
They could still build it in Cuba.
Thanks for posting. That was a very enjoyable read.
This part was scarey..."the offer of nine great universities to offer cultural programming". I can only imagine what that programming would be...something along the lines of Ward Churchill.
The best part:
"We do not believe there is a viable alternative place for the IFC at the World Trade Center site. We consider our work, therefore, to have been brought to an end."
Good riddance, elitist hate-America Leftist swines.
Don't bet they are beaten. They will be back and sneaker than ever. Next on the list, defeat the "Crescent" design in Pennsylvania.
We are profoundly sorry to see:
That the citizens of the United States of America don't like the idea of turning hallowed ground into a free-for-all for America bashing, but instead prefer a fitting memorial to the events of 9/11/01 and those who lost their lives on that day.
Congratulations to the people of NYC for defeating these anti-American haters. Thank you for not allowing them to desecrate the ground so many died on.
Neither do we. Buh-bye, now! :)
Cultural programming is precisely why the abomination called the IFC will never stand on sacred ground.
YEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAW!!
And .. the Freedom to not be forced to look at all the liberal drivel.
To all the people who donated to this MESS - don't expect your money back.
Don't let the door hitcha...
A lot of credit for stopping this goes to Debra Burlingame--her brother's plane was hi-jacked and she fought like mad to see that this memorial site didn't get hi-jacked as well!
The best memorial for the World Trade Center site already exist; or it did so a little while ago.
In the courtyard of the World Trade Center prior to September 11th, 2001 stood a statue that was a globe and on it map of the world. When they cleaned the area up that statue was recovered. It too had been damaged , one whole quadrant on the top was badly deformed.
There was some debate on what caused this damage. I subscribe to the theory that a person not whishing to die by fire and jumped crashed into the globe. The other theory, that part of the towers did the damage, seems to me, to be invalid since parts of the tower would have struck the globe with much grater force than a body falling at or near terminal velocities.
This, IMHO, would be the ultimate memorial: a piece of the old world (pre-9/11), deformed by the events of 9/11 (whose life hasnt been changed?), on display at the site as both a memorial and a warning.
But, it will never happen. No money for a artist to display their gross lack of talent. And too graphic and divisive a statement (right
.)
"...where the Lord splitcha."
Tough $hit, you b@st@rds.
Dear reactionary leftist IFC creeps:
FOAD
Sincerely,
Petronski
Doublespeak worthy of Doktor Goebbels himself. [puke]
you can thank Pataki.
also very true, she was the key non-politician person in stopping this.
