FLOYD --- Speculation about who killed Evelyn Miller swelled here as people learned of the child pornography charge against Casey Frederiksen, a father figure to the slain girl.
Some residents said the charge raises suspicions against Frederiksen. Frederiksen's mother, Sandy Kuykendal, said the charges are unrelated to Evelyn's death and the hurtful rumors need to stop.
"The town's been ganging up on him," she said. "The rumors are hard but that's all they are, are rumors."
Lynette Connerley, a neighbor to Frederiksen, said she had believed he was clean of serious crimes since Evelyn disappeared from their rural apartment building three months ago.
"It's kind of scary that that's what he was into," she said. "I'm glad I never let my granddaughter go down there."
Frederiksen, who lived with Evelyn's mother, Noel Miller, was charged late Thursday with one count of possession of child pornography. An indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court Friday alleges that in July, Frederiksen, 26, possessed images, produced on a computer, of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. He pleaded innocent to the charges Friday.
No charges in Evelyn's death have been filed. The 5-year-old disappeared July 1 from her home and rescue teams searched for days until her body was found in the Cedar River.
Floyd County Attorney Marilyn Dettmer said Frederiksen's charge "does not mean he is guilty of killing Evelyn Miller." Dettmer's office was not involved with the child pornography charge, and her investigation continues, she said.
The Rev. Paul Phillips, who held a prayer during an August balloon launch honoring what would have been Evelyn's sixth birthday, said Frederiksen's charge "seems like where the investigation was going."
In July, days after Evelyn disappeared, the Department of Human Services put Evelyn's two younger [half-]brothers, Gabriel and Damien, in foster care. Investigators seized items from Miller's and Frederiksen's apartment in September. Last week Frederiksen cut one of his wrists.
Those acts, and the behavior of Miller and Frederiksen during the July search and months following, fueled rumors, Phillips said.
Many people interviewed Friday asked to remain anonymous for various reasons, including fear and requests from law enforcement. They all had their own theory on who was responsible for Evelyn's death.
"In a larger town you can hide, but in a smaller town more is visible," Phillips said. "It's been difficult on this town ... I feel real sorry for the families and relatives involved."
Several attempts to reach Noel Miller, who lived with Frederiksen for two years at 1481 Quarry Road No. 6, were unsuccessful.

Statistically shouldn't there be more? A charge for "one" pic seems, well, odd. Almost like they are holding it over him to get him to roll over on someone. And why did Noel give the hard drive to someone for safe keeping? She obviously knew. What's with her reaction to the neighbor giving up the hard drive?
This just seems really, really bizarre. From the sounds of this guy, seems like you could hear the two marbles rolling around in his head.
I really hope LE gets to the bottom of this, Evelyn deserves justice.
I'm not defending him either, he just seems not overly bright and unable to do much more than say "pass me the doobie".

I guess maybe I'm not a good friend, because if my friend's kid had been murdered and they asked me to hold (hide) a computer hard drive, I'd say "Sure" and then I'd call the cops.
Is this child porn of small children or teenage girls that are not quite of age...?
They don't strike me as the kind of people who would have "good" friends in any sense of the word.
Why would anyone want to help them HIDE something, especially since the circumstances of her death are so odd and suspicous toward them!
Authorities have not revealed that fact. Under federal law he was charged with minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct .... and a minor is ANYONE under the age of 18.

The charge is having a "HARD-DRIVE" containing IMAGES(plural).
Sunnyusa: The police have the hard-drive only because the "good friend" did turn it over right shortly after Noel gave it to her for "safe-keeping.
My question is: Several people used the computer so how can they pin the whole rap on casey?

KCRG reports tonight that Casey is charged with having over a THOUSAND photographs stored on the computer.
