"I've found that the highway numbers posted by vehicles with manual transmissions can be equalled or exceeded on the highway (at least in the summer)."
Interesting. is that with the air conditioner running? That was another point Consumer reports made - that neither modern heavier traffic or air conditioning is included in the EPA estimates.

I've found that the highway numbers posted by vehicles with manual transmissions can be equalled or exceeded on the highway The number posted for my '05 Toyota Corolla, stick shift is 41mpg highway, I have far exceeded that.
As an experiment recently on a 300 mile trip, I drove 55 mph and got an astounding 54 mpg.
Holding at or just above the speed limit I routinely get 44-47 mpg.

My faith in Consumer Reports falls slightly behind my faith in the EPA - which is very little. All my vehicles of the last 10-20 years have gotten approximately what the EPA's mileage figures said they would get. And I don't drive gently.
That said, I'm glad now that I traded in my Mid-sized SUV for a smaller one 2 years ago.
