It might make some here feel better, but if Dubya KNOWS he made a good pick and she ends up doing a good job for us on the USSC, what does it matter? Why do we think it should be someone WE know?

In the early 1990s, she led a fight to get the American Bar Association to reverse its pro-abortion rights policy. She lost.

I hope your right. It is upsetting that all the conservative judges who have spoken out about the drifting role of the court in the last 40 years have been punished today. They were not selected because of their conservative judicial restraint on the bench. I would have loved to see a Janice Rogers Brown. Bush didn't have the principal to appoint her. Instead we received the lady Harry Reid suggested Bush pick. Guess we know who's running the show.

Number 2, I think. Which OFTEN means liberal...but not always. As I said.

Also, compared to Roberts, Miers' appears to be woefully underqualified. Indeed, it seems her primary qualification is the fact that she's a Bush confidant. Not necessarily a matter of great concern, but a bit disappointing nonetheless.

Not that I have to defend my conservatism to a reactionary like you, but I've been a conservative my entire life. I have deep roots, most likely that are deeper and longer-term than most of the people on this forum...........including you.

And all the childish name calling on your part won't change who I am, nor what I stand for.........and it is deep conservatism.

If you think the screaming, emotional, thoughtless nonsense on this thread is the work of conservatives, then you HAVE drunk the kool-aid.

Since 1952, every Republican ticket for national office except one (1964) has included a Bush, a Dole, or a Nixon. Perhaps it is, indeed, time for a change.

I'm not spreading any falsehoods. Find one or retract that false accusation. Jumping to conclusions - yes, I do that, and I fully admit it. In this particular case it doesn't seem like a big leap.

George W. Bush knowing this person for 20 years does not give me any confidence whatsoever. He has also known Gonzales for many years and he would not be acceptable as a pick. For me the reverse is true: that he has known her 20 years brings up the concern that this is political cronyism, something that this President has been particularly bad concerning (e.g., Brown at FEMA, the new ICE pick, Gonzales, and so on).

Agreed

When one sees bar association head, state lottery director and apparent dim support red flags have to go up. When Scalia and Thomas were nominated we knew exactly what we were getting and we haven't been disappointed. These stealth candidates usually turn out to be anything but strict constructionists. By the time you're 60, people have a pretty good idea where you stand on such issues.

Just saw a writer for the WSJ on CNBC. He characterized her as a pragmatic conservative. Pragmatic is not what I was looking for.

"There were far better candidates in my opinion - which is worth less than $.02."

These instant tidbits about her contributions and experience are causing too much pre-judging. I'm inclined to wait and see.

I was. I was trying to explain the stupidity of the comment. Meaning that the poster really has no idea.

also-----I suppose you agree with these 'conservatives' who are saying something is seriously wrong with her because she is either ugly, gay or a b*tch because she never married?? Is that another requirement of being the perfect 'conservative'???

I'm coming to the realization that Bush makes noises about abortion to get us Pro-lifers on board at election time, but does nothing about it (except they'll mention it in 2006 and 2008 to keep us on board)

Well, not so much rope-a-dope, but sending her up there for the purpose of having the Dems tip their hand.

If she's rejected, fine. If not, then maybe we have something here.

Let's all remember how Roberts shined in the Committee hearings. He delivered multiple pimp-slaps to the Dems by showing his command of the subject matter.

Let's wait for the hearings and see how she performs.

_I_ was "the base" in 1988 (and in 1980, when President Reagan chose Bush as veep). I was NEVER "fine" with GHWB. I always believed he leaned too far left, and in '80 I was hoping for a big, continuous string of conservative thought to follow Reagan. I'd hoped that Kemp would be Pres.Reagan's choice for veep.

...

On your other item: I, too, believe that the President knows Meirs much better than I do, and have found it wise to trust his judgment.

I can't get over how all the Dems are fawning over Miers. Not a good sign at all. Of course if I turn out to be wrong I'll admit it, but if Bush is wrong we'll all suffer.

Not necessarily someone WE know, but someone with a proven record....SOMETHING that CAN be known about such an important pick.
