CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia GOP Rep. Shelley Moore Capito announced Monday she will not challenge U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd in 2006.
Capito said she will instead seek a fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
"If circumstances were to change and the environment were to change, then people might say they want to see me in a different role," Capito told the Charleston Daily Mail.
"But I took a lot of time with this decision. My best future right now is to ask voters to send me back to my seat in Congress. I feel I've been very effective there, and there's more to be done."
Byrd announced last week he would seek a record ninth term in the Senate. The 87-year-old Democrat said he was "ready to go another round."
Capito, the 51-year-old daughter of former congressman and three-term GOP Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr., was viewed as the Republicans' best hope of unseating Byrd next year.

12 Terms for the KKK member Bird....dottering old fool. Amazing
Time to put a sensibility limmit on congress. But if we did that, there would be no one there....hey there's an idea.
Every where you go in West Virginia you see his name everywhere.
Damn pork state. Can't make it on its own so it has to depend on this old fart to bring home the bacon. He'll get re-elected.

Good! That leaves it to Hiram Lewis to take out the old goat.
****
I would love to see him win. Although living in this state, I don't see it happening.

why would he have a chance against Byrd. The only way he came close in '04 was the anti McGraw vote and the efforts of 'for the sake of the Kids', we need a candidate thats know how to campaign and win. besides if the RNC is looking for another candidate they aren't going to back him.

WV and the GOP would be better served by the re-election of Capito to the House rather than a pyric try at unseating Byrd. Capito is going to have a rough go at
winning another house term.
Despite going for W in the last two Presidential elections, WV is still solidy Democratic
on the local level. Energy prices in a state full of people on fixed incomes may well kill her chances.

No, nothing personal, but in West Virginia no one thinks about the steps involved to winning a campaign. The Years of planning, you don't decide to run for senate you plan for it. If we are going to build a strong party people need to start running for less high profile races. Concentrate on House of Del. and State Senate. Build up political Capital. This will help raise statewide id for this potential candidates and start the process of gaining earned media, and add in raising the necessary funds to pull off these big races. Lets build a party not just win a seat. As a state party and West Virginia Republicans lets think about the long term effects and ramification that these moves could have on the local, state and federal elections. If the GOP will work together change will come to WV. As far as who could replace Byrd, I don't know of anyone, unless Capito would reconsider, but we need to start looking. And if we do retain a serious challenge lets her behind him (not trying to find faults in them) work to push WV toward becoming more of a red state.
