WASHINGTON President Bush will hold a press conference on Tuesday in the Rose Garden at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
The issue that most likely will dominate the event is Bush's Monday pick of White House counsel Harriet Miers (search) for Supreme Court justice. If confirmed, Miers would take the place of retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor (search).

And therein lies the difference across the board, I think. You choose to trust him. My trust in him at this point is shaky at best. I'm seeing very very few who are actually excited about this pick. Many seem to be willing to trust and many others have given trust of this President a very leary eye.
Just a question...Prior to 24/7 cable news and the Internet, how much did most of us really care and know about the S.C. nominations & candidates?
I don't see alot of "stake burning" going on. I'm waiting for more information, but is it not reasonable for people to voice their opinions? There are people that I agree with on this and others that I don't. That's reasonable, but saying people who question the pick are "burning her at the stake" is just inflammatory IMO.
I guess you call Souter a conspiracy theory. I'm a believer then.
What were YOU promised?
What were YOU promised?
Souter was recommemded by rudman and sunnunu, GHWB did not know Souter.
GWB has worked with Ms. Meirs for the last 10 years, but you can crouch in the fetal position and suck your thumb that you are "betrayed" while all the evidence shows otherwise.
PROFILES IN JELLO
I just returned from Seattle and swear I saw OBL in a Starbucks!
I still can't believe that GWB nominated his personal attorney. When you stand back and think about this, it truly is unbelievable:
a) cronyism (especially in the wake of the Brown debacle, whether "Brownie" deserved his vituperation or not);
b) lack of impartial judgment on both his part (she presumably is a personal friend, so therefore, how can he stand in dispassionate judgment of her crendentials) and hers (he was her former client, both personally and as President, yet she will be in judgment of his actions in a co-equal branch of government);
c) lack of a professional background which provides her with the apparent tools necessary for the nation's top appellate court (head of the Texas Lottery commission, executive positions with her law firm, Dallas and Texas Bars?).
What was GWB thinking. Even if she proves to be a good pick, the process sucks.
I for one, think that this Lady is going to be strong, and good.
I get the feeling that she is a tough nut to crack...I think fat boy and chucky cheese have their menus in front of them...
I feel really good about this Lady....
I will second your remarks.
Listening.
I have put forth a theory, in another thread, that this nomination has Rove's fingerprints on it.
The two ways to toughen the spines of GOP Senators are to flood their offices with phone calls/e-mails and to make them pay for their behavior at the ballot box.
Perhaps this is part of Rove's strategy for long-term Republican hegemony.
Bush won in 2004 because the base got energized and turned out in record numbers.
Could this be part of re-energizing the base...causing them to put forth candidates that are actually to the "right" of Bush and will "get the job done"??
If the base DOES get energized ala-2004 not only could they put better people in office,but it would be a STRONGER GOP caucus.
Just a thought. The anger of my fellow Freepers make me wonder if this might just be coorect.
would you like some cheese with that whine?
W. has known her for ten years, should stricktly intrepret and not legislate from the bench
LOL. They are funny.
"That's reasonable, but saying people who question the pick are "burning her at the stake" is just inflammatory IMO."
Then you haven't seen many of the posts here on FR since she was announced yesterday.
Go check a few from yesterday
You apparently believe Bill Kristol is looney conspiracy theorist who in the face of "ALL THE EVIDENCE" is sucking his thumb in the crib too? Well what are we debating for? DANE says it's not up for discussion anymore. I guess the conservatives like Thune are conspiracy theorists too.
Saying he wants an up or down vote by thanksgiving. spent a paragraph trying to convince us that she's a real conservative.
