Yesterday a tanker truck jacknifed and slammed into an suv at MM 41 on the 7-Mile Bridge which links the Middle Keys with the Lower Keys and Key West. Tanker driver and suv driver killed, other pasenger in SUV flown to Miami Jackson Hospital. US One is the only link to Lower Keys closed until an hour ago. It has now been re-opened.

The t.v. footage of the tanker burning last night was unbelievealbe, all Miami stations flew down choppers to cover it. Finally a foam truck from Boca Chica Naval Air Base came in and put the fire out in minutes. Meanwhile the old road has been rendered useless by either local or state govt., big error, IMHO.

I kinda felt like the media was really hyping the theory that the bridge would be close for a long time due to stress from the heat of the fire. Typical msm spin. And what do you know it's open already.

Foam firefighting is great.
Target has a little one for $17.
I've even seen a smaller version in a supermarket.
Just get some wherever you find it.

The old road has been closed because it is structurally deficient in numerous ways. The lanes are too narrow, the guardrails substandard, and the basic structure incapable of holding modern traffic loads.

Besides the fact of who would pay for the upkeep of an old 7-mile bridge that never gets used (at least past the research center).
Personally, I don't miss that old bridge at all.

Was it the northbound side or southbound side? Or is there no separation? I'm going down there on friday morning.

The poor wife of the semi driver called our shop by mistake this morning thinking we were the hospital. The lady was obviously distraught and we pointed her to a few phone numbers to try to help.
Prayers for the unfortunate victims and their families in this time of grief.

Just curious. I noticed a few years ago that a movie was made on the Marathon end of it starring Arnold. Might have been a good idea to have kept it up as an alternative way in and out of the Lower and Middle Keys.
