New Orleans Laying Off 3,000 Employees

(CNSNews.com) - New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin announced Tuesday the city is forced to lay off 3,000 city hall employees. "It is with great sadness that we announce that we are unable to hold onto some of our dedicated city workers," Nagin said. "As of October 8, non-essential city employees are on emergency aid without pay." Only essential police and fire officials will remain, he said. Laid-off workers will reportedly get their final paycheck on Oct. 14. "We checked with federal sources, state sources, banks and other financial institutions, but we are just unable to maintain the financing necessary to keep these wonderful people employed by our great city," Nagin said. As far as the cleanup effort goes, the Ninth Ward is draining slowly, he added.

that was my first thought. Hmmmm, laying off phantom employees.

Did Nagin ever lay off his phantom policemen?

You also have to wonder why Nagin announced this about 2 hours before Bill Clinton arrives on the scene. I listened to some of the back and forth at his press conference and this chump has no command of facts (revenue levels, reserve balances, anything that would tell you that he understood the financial picture of the city). I'm sure that Clinton will be able to summon up the chutzpah to carry of the role of sugar daddy to New Orleans. Thank God he's in no position to back it up.

IMHO, the first people to receive "permanent pink slips" should have been Mayor Nagin, Governor Blanco and Senator Landrieu. And, let's not forget that Congressional Black Caucus stalwart waste of humanity, William Jefferson.

That's my first thought too. The smartest thing for Nagin to do is to purge the payroll of the ghosts immediately to cover his tracks. It also keeps the real employees from whining too much.

Next these ghosts will appear on unemployment lists, and of course since they are scattered all over, they won't have to show up in person at the unemployment office. In fact I would be surprised if there was not a humane accommodation made where the layoff lists would be fed directly into the unemployment benefit computers.

Probably none at this time. They will be the last to go.

Yes, well a good company always keeps its best workers until the last.

You comment would be funny if it wasn't so plausible.

To save on postage the city only used 3 envelopes, clustering employees living at the same address.

Did he try asking those Hollywood folks who visited a few weeks ago if they would make payroll for him?
