Operation Rescue Will Not Support Miers to the Supreme Court
Christian Communication Network ^ | 5 October 2005

Posted on 10/04/2005 6:11:44 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 /Christian Wire Service/ -- Today, President George W. Bush has nominated White House Counsel Harriet Miers to fill the Supreme Court vacancy left by retiring Sandra Day O'Connor.

While many pro-life groups were frustrated with the lack of information about the abortion stand of Bush's first Supreme Court nominee, John Roberts, even less is known about Harriet Miers. Some have placed her in the same category as pro-abortion administration officials Condoleezza Rice and Karen Hughes.

"We must reject the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman.

"President Bush promised that he would appoint strong constitutional constructionist to the Supreme Court in the mold of Thomas and Scalia, but Miers is no Thomas or Scalia," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "We must be given a nominee that will restore the protections of personhood to the pre-born. If your head was about to be crushed, would you want to trust you life to someone who will not state their position on your murder?"

"Bush was given one mandate by the American people in the last election and that was to reform the Supreme Court. Reform does not come in a brown paper bag," said Newman.

The President clearly has some work to do here...

Clearly Operation Rescue is not understanding that the one thing we can be quite sure about is that Miers is pro life.

My neighbor dropped his ABA membership when they took a pro choice position and he's well acquainted with Miers work on behalf of the pro life movement.

Someone should tell Operation Rescue to get their facts straight.

Given that you know "little or nothing about her", I wonder how you can reach that conclusion Troy?

Extremely weak rationale stated for not supporting her. Seems they would stay neutral until learning something about her.

What did they say about Roberts?

Because I feel confident on Miers being pretty conservative socially, I just hope she will take a literal interpretation of the Constitution on the Court in the same way she does the Bible in her home.

Operation rescue have not been doing their homework.

Clearly that's the case, in light of the known fact that she is strongly pro-life and a devout Christian. Two qualities this organization strives to emphasize.

Operation Rescue is not supporting the nomination!?!?! Oh no, Bush must retract Miers the nomination now...(sarcasm in full force)

Neither will People for the American Way, Barbra Streisand or Schumer...so both sides are unhappy.

Most people I know, if Operation Rescue is for someone, they would never support that person. This organization, rightly or wrongly, is viewed as a kook fringe group, esp. Randall Terry (who may or may not still be associated with them).

I don't see the logic of this. The indication is that Miers is anti-abortion.

It is certainly odd. It should be noted that Priest For Life (the Catholic Pro-Life group) is strongly in favor of Ms. Miers.

He has done his work, for good or bad. This selection is "fait accompli". He has made his mark - he made a promise - we voted for him. We will either love him like Reagan or spurn him like Nixon. It was his call and he has to live by the consequences.

Knee-jerk. Wonder if they bothered to call her pastor or church. Don't they have staffs who are supposed to at least be able to use Google?

I'm also reminded of what Dr. Dobson told Brit yesterday, something to the effect of "religion aside, Harriet Miers has all the qualities of a judge, even if she wasn't one, because she made a pronouncement to interpret the rule of law, abide by the Constitution, and if she is nominated she will respect the position and not legislate from the bench". Dr. Dobson said basically from that alone, he's comfortable with the pick, unless something horrible comes up between now and her confirmation hearing.

Yep. They are the counterbalance of the ACLU (as I like to call them "The American Criminal Lawyers Union").

Operation Rescue was founded by Randall Terry, who may still be active with the organization. And anyone familiar with him knows that Terry has credibility problems of his own.

Operation Rescue probably doesn't care whether Miers is pro life, since what matters is whether Miers is anti-Roe, and it's not the same thing..

Just a hunch here...if Miers gets nominated for SC and turns out to be ultra-conservative in her judicial decisions, then maybe the conservatives in the USA will see the benefit of having born-again christian evangelicals on the court. Hang on...the ride is going to get bumpier.

I could honestly care less what Operation Rescue, Randell Terry, Bo Gritz, or any other fringe organization or political opportunist believes with regard to the Miers nomination.

Kathryn Jean Lopez was absolutely correct in her (tentative) assessment yesterday.

Their opposition is worthless, but that doesn't make Harriet Miers any more qualified for this position than she was prior to their condemnation.

There are enough conservatives-both ordinary, idealistic Americans and members of the commentariet and legal community-who have qualms to cast doubt in the minds of even the most fervent Bush advocate.

Operation Rescue does more work to save humans from death by abortion then anyone in this chat room. They are on the front lines while you folks sit in your easy chairs playing armchair quarterbacks.

If you want to do something about abortion instead of just talk about how bad it is then join us at http://www.marchtogether.com.

Don't complain about OR, complain about the 4,000 human beings who won't live through the day because an abortion "doctor" will take their lives from them.
