Republican U.S. Senate candidate Don Stenberg blamed Democrats Tuesday for liberal judges, gay marriages, abortion and other social ills, but he reserved his harshest criticism for fellow Republicans in Washington.
Former Nebraska attorney general and now an official Senata candidate Don Stenberg
Stenberg blamed Republicans in the nation's capital - including President Bush - for the growing federal budget deficit, for "confused" border policies and for increasing federal control over local education.
"Republicans in Washington need to be reminded why they were sent there in the first place," Stenberg said as he kicked off a 12-city tour of the state.
The former Nebraska attorney general is one of three men seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson.
This is Stenberg's third bid for the office. Both GOP primary opponents are running for public office for the first time: former Ameritrade executive Pete Ricketts and Omaha attorney David Kramer.
Stenberg did not name the Republicans whom he believes have failed to live up to their conservative credentials, although he criticized President Bush specifically for the spending and the federal government's role in education.
"Under a Republican Congress and a Republican president, federal spending has skyrocketed," Stenberg said.
Stenberg said he believes Bush was the "right person" to be in office during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and that he supports the war in Iraq. But he voiced disappointment that the president had not vetoed any spending bills.
He also took issue with the president for working with Democratic U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy to pass the controversial "No Child Left Behind" law, which required states to set school standards or risk losing federal dollars.
"Republicans have always supported local control of education until recently," Stenberg said.
If elected, Stenberg said, he would look for ways to reduce the federal deficit, including cutting $25 billion of "pork" from the federal highway budget and reducing spending on the Medicare prescription drug benefit by targeting benefits to "truly needy senior citizens."
Sound fellow. Hope he gets elected.
Regards, Ivan
I wish this guy the best of luck.
How can I help his campaign?
When your options are the Commie Dems, voteless Libertarians, or the Spineless anti-Commie Dems aka Republicans, where do you go?
This obviously means he is a closet Liberal Communist who belongs at DU!
He sounds like our OKIE Senator.....Tom Coburn.

BTW, Harriet Miers donated $1000 to Don Stenberg's campaign in 2000.
I have no problem with Don Stenberg on the issues, but he's a dull, flat-footed candidate. He ran against Ben Nelson in 2000 and ran far, far behind George W. Bush in the voting booth. It't time to try someone new.
Since there are no first-tier candidates lining up against Nelson, let super-wealthy Pete Ricketts use his money to at least make Nelson work for reelection.
A good old midwestern conservative. Mm good.
Stenberg lost a close race against the very popular former governor Ben Nelson in 2000. Hopefully, this time he could win. Regardless it will be close.
It would be nice to have another GOP Senator with some spine. (Their are far too few of them currently)
A conservative with cajones!
Yes, this is the same Stenberg as in Stenberg v. Carhart, the partial birth abortion case.
I cant believe it someone who is willing to face the sell out GOP RINOs - who is willing to stand up for conservatism and not run and hide like all the weak kneed RINOs in office - most notably Bush.
What does it say about the guy that he's already lost Senate races twice in heavily Republican Nebraska?
Yes, he is the same Stenberg.
Wow, sounds like a strong conservative guy. I'd give him my vote. He's going to get slaughtered - by Republicans.
His mentioning the deficits, the "Confused" Border Policy and Fed encroachment on local control of many things, not just education, hit the nail on the head as far as I'm concerned. Hope he and a host of other would be candidates really mean what they say and, if elected, don't become RINOs when the time for hard decisions arrives - As too many elected Republicans have IMO.
