Saddam's former number two urges escalation of insurgency

LONDON (AFP) - Saddam Hussein's former right-hand man Ezzat Ibrahim al-Duri called for an escalation of the deadly insurgency in Iraq

Ibrahim, who has been on the run since the US-led invasion of March 2003, urged "resistance movements and the Baath party to intensify the national campaign against the occupation", according to the letter published in the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Qods Al-Arabi.

US commanders suspect that Ibrahim, 63, has been the paymaster of many attacks on their troops during the insurgency that erupted after Saddam's downfall in April 2003.

Ibrahim also warned against the "sectarian division of Iraq to the benefit of the occupation forces", and denounced Sunni leaders who have agreed to "collaborate" with the United States.

"There should be no negotiation or direct or indirect contact with the enemy and its agents," said the letter, published just 10 days before Iraqis are due to vote in a referendum on a post-Saddam constitution.

Perhaps we should flush Saddams former number two.

That may be better as a metaphor than a pun!

I sure wish we could find this redheaded bastard and let some Kurds or Shiites have their way with him.

Looks like he and Cindy Sheehan are on the same page.

". . . denounced Sunni leaders who have agreed to "collaborate" with the United States . . . "

They've lost it and they know it.

national campaign against the occupation

This moron is behind in the news. The "occupation" ended June 2004. The coalition forces are now invited guests of the elected Iraqi government.

As far as I can recall this is the first time Al Duri has raised his head since the '03 invasion. If he is coming out now, it may be a good time to make locating him a BIG priority...

One would think only diehard Baathist with no hope of ever being integrated into the new Iraq are following this guy at this stage. He operates outside the country, all he has is money to distribute. He last year swore allegiance to a foreigner, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. The Z-man is on his way out.
Any day an ultimatum may be sent to Asad Bashar that he must turn over Izzat to a Marine detachment at the border or risk having to defend many Syrian border towns from US military raids, which obviously would make him look weak in his peoples eyes. If his military attempted to resist, they get bruised or worse. And surely unless Izzat has relocated, Syrian Intel already have his phone numbers and street address. Shame he can't be turned over soon, then marched into Saddam's cell to say hi. Sort of a good old fashion social visit.
