Republican activists yesterday lashed out at President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court, excoriating White House emissaries at two "off-the-record" gatherings of Washington conservatives.
"I can't stomach another 'trust me' from a Republican" in the Oval Office, Free Congress Foundation President Paul M. Weyrich told Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman at Mr. Weyrich's regular Wednesday conservative coalition luncheon.
Mr. Mehlman made an extensive pitch on behalf of Miss Miers at the Weyrich weekly luncheon, which brings together conservative activists and lawmakers.
Former Republican National Chairman Ed Gillespie ran into a similar storm of criticism at the weekly morning meeting of about 200 conservative interest-group leaders and activists hosted by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
"We've been on the wrong side of the question mark with nominees like John Paul Stevens, Anthony Kennedy, David Souter and Sandra Day O'Connor, and asking us to take another question mark in the person of Harriet Miers is asking us to take a lot," Connie Mackey, vice president of the Family Research Council, told Mr. Gillespie.

Former Republican National Chairman Ed Gillespie ran into a similar storm of criticism at the weekly morning meeting of about 200 conservative interest-group leaders and activists hosted by Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform.
Would that be the same Grover Norquist who worked so assidiously to get terrorist-supporting Muslim 'community leaders' entry into the White House?
yep. Rush limbaugh, barking moonbat.
What's a "barking moonbat"?
In this case, it's anyone who dares question the president.
We must keep the pressure up!!! This is a once in a lifetime chance to change the court and I am not going to take my chances on a 60 year old unknown!!!!!!
Tony Snow used the phrase "Bed wetting Republicans"
By the way I supported Roberts, I just can't fathom that she is anywhere close to even one of the top 100 nominees out there!!!
Yes, sometimes he is, particularly during Arbitron ratings-sweeps weeks.
I suspect that this ia an Arbitron ratings-sweeps week.
Don't worry! There's an antidote!
Yup, it would be the same, but it didn't matter the PI got there first.
Miers is an uneccesary gamble. Anyone saying otherwise has been licking the presidents boots for too long.
well, another unfounded attack to bolster your position.
Nice work, I see you're taking a page from the liberal playbook.
I hope Miers turns out to be a strict constructionist and that Cheney was right - her record makes us proud. But more than anything I'm disgusted with the way this has turned people against each other who largely agree.
I've seen Freepers the last two days using terms toward each other that we typically reserve for DUers and trolls.
I agree, this nomination has cost the administration more than they currently comprehend. For myself it is the third strike. Spending like a Dem, ignoring the border, selecting a McCainist supreme court justice.
Several republicans will begin walking off the Bushangelical reservation and head towards true conservatism (values and backbone that win) in the next few months. As for the President, he will find it extremely difficult to push his agenda through. I hate to say it but, I smell a lame duck in the oven.
But let's not go ballistic over our senatorial traitors- let's get angry because the President didn't pick who we wanted for the USSC.
What makes Miers a McCainist supreme court justice?
let me clarify this...have the senators already voted and rejected a known conservative jurist nominated for the supreme court since the roberts confirmation?
No. But trying is the first step towards failure,so why even bother, eh? If GWB nominated somebody like janice rogers brown and she was rejected, why, he couldn't nominate another candidate ever again!
The amount of rationalization going on this week has been astounding.
Weird stuff going on.
My suspicion that Rush is engaging in a ratings stunt is not unfounded.
I have noticed that very often when Rush does controversial stuff that gets him mentioned in the mainstream media, the event is usually followed by revelations elsewhere that the latest Arbitron ratings have been published.
I was alerted to this years ago when a caller to Rush's show, much to Rush's consternation, mentioned a Limbaugh ratings stunt before he was cut off.
