Bus Catches Fire Inside Brooklyn Battery Tunnel

(New York - WABC, October 6, 2005) - A bus caught fire inside the Brooklyn Battery tunnel Thursday night about 250 feet north of the Brooklyn exit.

Civilians exited on foot out of the tunnel and according to officials there were multiple injuries, though none of them serious. Three patients were being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The tunnel is shut down Brooklyn-bound only at this time.

According to officials this is an accident and there is no suspicious activity involved.

Again, there is no indication that this is in any way related to the subway terror threat Mayor Bloomberg revealed earlier today.

We'll have more on this fire as we get more information and we'll have a complete wrap up on Eyewitness News at 11:00 p.m.

What suspicious package? I heard the WABC report on TV, nothing else. They didn't mention a suspicious package.

I think when the subway blows up, they'll tell us it was not terrorist related, and had nothing to do with the recent terrorist threats.

Is there EVER any suspicious activity anywhere?

Nothing to see here, folks. Move along. Probably just a depressed smoker who tried to kill himself with his lighter.

After Herr Bloomberg is re-elected for the second time you won't need to worry about such unforeseen accidents.

I'm sure that smoking will be outlawed altogether.

"Talk about a coincidence."

Coincidence yes, but not a surprise. Most of those MTA buses suck.

When was the last time one caught fire in a major underground tunnel?

"When was the last time one caught fire in a major underground tunnel?"

That I cannot tell you. A few years back MTA buses were braking down in and out of the tunnels.

When was the last time one caught fire in a major underground tunnel?

And during Ramadan? And after an attempted bombing in Oklahoma? And after a threat to the subway?

I expect there will be various incidents during the next month that will be explained away, even as we are told there are threats.

I think when NYC blows up, they'll tell us it was one giant gas leak.

Yup. And the OC bomber was just 'depressed' (frequented a Mosque, Jihadist materials found in his lodgings, nails embedded in a tree near where he blew up, he had been trying to buy Ammonium Nitrate, a chemical used by some Jihadists including the attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid was in his backpack, he tried to get into the football game at halftime and ran away rather than submit to having the backpack searched, his roommate was from Pakistan...)

Even Monica wouldn't swallow THAT!

My daughter and I plan to take the subway train to lecture this evening.

No extra precautions other than our ordinary protective headgear.
