PETER CAVE: The Bush administration today advised the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Dr Mohammed El Baradei, that it would support his re-appointment for a third term.
And in a series of meetings in Washington, including with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Dr El Baradei agreed with the administration that his agency needs to focus on Iran's nuclear program.
From Washington, John Shovelan reports the Bush administration has had to accept his re-appointment because it couldn't muster any support for a change on the IAEA Board.
JOHN SHOVELAN: Dr El Baradei met the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice today for half an hour.
The meeting followed a decision by the administration to end its opposition to him being reappointed by the International Atomic Energy Agency Board, which meets next Monday.
State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says the US will now accept the view of the other 34 members of the IAEA Board.
SEAN MCCORMACK: We expect, when the vote comes up in the Board of Governors on this issue, that we will join the consensus.
REPORTER: Was that something that Secretary conveyed to El Baradei today?
SEAN MCCORMACK: No, he's had a number of conversations in Washington. I think he understands clearly where we are on the issue.
JOHN SHOVELAN: The US Government had been implacably opposed to a third term for Dr El Baradei.
It believed under him the UN's nuclear watchdog had been weak.
Dr El Baradei, for example, believed the "jury was still out" on the suspect Iranian nuclear program, while the Bush administration had been pressing him to refer the matter to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.
US officials say in their meeting today Dr Rice and Dr El Baradei agreed on the urgency of halting the spread of nuclear weapons technology, and that the agency's focus should be on Iran.
And in place of its previous criticism, the US Government today praised the efforts of the IAEA.
SEAN MCCORMACK: With respect to any alleged past disputes, we're looking forward, and there's a lot of work to be done with the IAEA and other members of the Board of Governors of the IAEA to prevent countries from acquiring nuclear weapons under the cover of civilian nuclear programs. It's important work.
JOHN SHOVELAN: Dr El Baradei made no statement after the meeting.
Underlining how awkward it was for both parties, there were no cameras in the room.
Dr El Baradei didnt speak to reporters either entering or leaving the State Department building.
But his spokesperson in Vienna says the United States set no conditions in exchange for its willingness to support him.
But it's understood Dr El Baradei has already given ground to the US and will support the creation of a special committee of the IAEA to crack down on violations of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
Next week he will also issue a report card into Iran's nuclear program, seen by some diplomats as another measure to placate the US.
John Shovelan, Washington.
Well, at least Chancelor Schröder of Germany didn't get it for his opposition to the Iraq War . . .
Still a crock of BS - but then again, the Nobel Peas Prize has been a crock of BS for quite a while now.......

Of course! When haven't the Noble Peace Prize been a joke?
Anybody know what the more common name for spelunking is?
when they gave it to Jimmy Carter?
Yes.
The should rename it the Appeasement award.
If the folks that handed out today's award were around then Chamberlain probably would have shared the award with Hitler.
No barf alert??
Excuse me while I go blow chunks
