Maybe he mistakenly built his remote to use the same frequency as the refs' wireless microphones.
Facetiousness aside, what depressed person contemplating suicide uses a bomb in a normally crowded environment? It crosses the line from being suicidal to the attempt at being homicidal. Suicide was just secondary.

"what depressed person contemplating suicide uses a bomb in a normally crowded environment'
exactly, if he didn't have homicidal intentions what was he doing with a bomb in an area traversed by many thousands of people that very evening??? A true suicide (who would be extremely unlikely to go to all the trouble to make a highly portable bomb) would not head for one of the busiest areas on campus to blow up a bomb. Some people are trying to make the fact that no one else was killed the main item of significance, BUT.... (1) the bomb may have detonated accidentally while he was waiting for halftime to release a lot of people from thes stadium; (2) he may have gone to the stadium with intentions of mass homicide but become discouraged at the last moment from failed attempts to access the stadium, etc.; (3) if he had a 'handler' who was detonating the bomb remotely, they may have become convinced that he was unreliable and was not going to carry out the plot, so they blew him up to prevent him from talking.
I sure don't know what the facts are, but I doubt that David BORON and others do, either. IT is absurd how easily some 'officials' seem to jump to one preferred explanation to avoid the implications of terrorism, Islamo-fascists in their community, etc. etc.

Well, it is possible that he had some hairbrained idea to go out in a truly spectacular way. Perhaps running onto the field at half-time and blowing himself up on the fifty yard line? Who knows.

You're closer to the truth than most people realize.
