OSLO, Norway (CNN) -- The U.N. nuclear watchdog and its head, Mohamed ElBaradei, won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their efforts to limit the spread of atomic weapons.

ElBaradei told CNN he was "overwhelmed." He said it was "a shot in the arm" for his agency and would strengthen its resolve in dealing with major issues like North Korea and Iran.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee picked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and ElBaradei, an Egyptian, from a record field of 199 candidates.

It praised ElBaradei as an "unafraid advocate" of measures to strengthen non-proliferation efforts. (Full citation)

If the bookies are taking money for next year, I'd put some money on him. Maybe it will be another joint winner, Chavez and Castro.

"Nuclear watchdog"?????????

LMAO...those morons couldn't figure out how to pour water out of a boot with the directions on the heel, much less FIND and REPORT anything nuclear.

They are nothing but slackers and probably very rich from kickbacks over the years. Makes me sick.

Absolutely, this is the Norwegian peaceniks trying to give GW another "kick in the shins".... the IAEA has been more of an enabler than an obstacle for North Korea and Iran.

Who can point to any real accomplishments for the IAEA???? It pretends there are no problems until the programs are so advanced that it is much harder to do anything about it. If they have their way they will dawdle until both Iran and North Korea have dozens of nuclear bombs. Not saying that the IAEA has any real enforcement teeth or power, but if they worked with rather than against the USA it might be possible to bring a lot more "international pressure" to bear.

Cindy Sheehan would have been the winner, but she didn't start attracting attention until after the deadline for nominations. I'm surprised they passed over Michael Moore.

Does El Baradei get the dough, or do they split it among everyone at the IAEA?

"unbelievable."

They gave it to that murderous thug Arafat, how is this not in keeping with that? I say we withdraw from the UN and let the SOB's fend for themselves.

How come Saddam didn't win? His inept defense of Iraq and his abdication from the throne certainly led to a lower level of war (and the corollary of that is an increase in the peace) in that region.
