Clinton aides battle Freeh over '60 minutes' book

Under strong pressure from former President Bill Clinton's advisers, CBS's ''60 Minutes'' has agreed to read a statement denying an explosive charge being made on Sunday nght's program by former FBI director Louis Freeh, the WASHINGTON POST reports.

In the statement, Samuel ``Sandy'' Berger, Clinton's national security adviser, challenges Freeh's assertion that Clinton failed to press Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to cooperate with an investigation of the 1996 bombing of Khobar Towers in that country, and used the occasion to ask for a contribution to his presidential library. The Saudis made such a donation last year _ six years after the 1998 meeting.

Berger, who was at the meeting, said: ``The president strongly raised the need for Saudi officials to cooperate with us on the investigation into the attack on Khobar Towers at the time when the FBI was attempting to gain access to the suspects. The president did not raise in any fashion the issue of his library.''

Clinton spokesman Jay Carson said he told CBS's Mike Wallace that he had supportive accounts from five other former officials at the meeting, including those briefed about a private conversation between Clinton and Abdullah.

``The fair journalistic question is why they didn't call and get comments for their story from people who were in the room, such as Sandy Berger, and why they took until Friday afternoon to get that done,'' said Lanny Davis, a former White House lawyer, who tried to persuade ''60 Minutes'' producer Jeff Fager to allow him or another Clinton spokesman to appear on Sunday night's segment.

Carson, who called the Freeh book ``a total work of fiction.''

"My 73 year old mother is doing cart wheels over the thought of the clintons doing time."

Funny, my 73 year old mother in law already wrote off the book as a piece of right wing fiction. When I asked her about all the Bush bashing books, she said that was the truth.

I then told her Halliburton is coming to take her social security check away, shook my head and wandered off.

I will never talk to her again, unless I have to.

I believe the plea bargain with Sandy Berger was that he pled guilty to a misdemeanor, not a felony.

I don't believe Bill Clinton was ever convicted of perjury. His law license was suspended for five years. That is not a criminal courts' conviction.

His impeachment is an indictment. The Senate failed to convict.

Why do they continue to support socialism in America even after it has been PROVEN to fail every time it's tried?

They honestly believe that all is well in the socialist states of Europe. News about New Zealand, the oldest socialist country, declaring bankruptcy and auctioning off their remnant government run companies in the 1980's is not well known.

As for communism, they honestly believe that communism in Russia was never given a fair trail, because it was the men in charge who caused it's failure, not system itself.

Makes you appreciate the wisdom of those who wrote our Constitution with division of powers between 3 branches and a bicameral legislative branch, checks and balances, federalism, republican form of government, all to help prevent the inherently greedy and powerseeking urges of certain men from taking over.

As communists believe in the Dictatorship of the Proletariat, their system is inherently flawed.

Media protection.

A writer at Newsweek admitted that 17 points in the general President election is due to left wing media bias.

Sorry your Mom has succumbed to the dark side. Haven't seen my Mom this excited in a long time. She was jumpin' up and down hollering "I TOLD YA THE CLINTON CLAN WAS GONNA GET IT" "Praise the Lord". She hates the Clintons with a passion. She actually cried when Slick Willie was elected. She said" Maybe now we'll find out where all the bodies are buried!"

Cracks me up...I try not to stoke her up too hot but it don't take much {:^)

All these lifelong pals, confederates, flunkies...recently or currently employed at the Clinton doublewide. Hmmm, does this count as 'cronyism'?

Who to believe: a former FBI director whose only apparent sin is association with the Clinton White House, or Sandy Berger, a crook and and long-time Clinton sycophant...?

Amazing that Clinton would recruit another criminal to try and rebut the words of the former FBI director, huh...

I presume that you have made a rhetorical comment???

"we needed Freeh in front of a grand jury or a congressional hearing - not on a book tour and on 60 minutes."

Book tours pay better.

The 60 Minutes skit (skit as in comedy show versus segment on a journalism show) was just a total hit piece on Freeh, trying to undermine his credibility.

Two comments on Clinton's administration and 25 on the incompetence of Freeh, including the inevitable 60 Minutes cut-aways of the interviewer making a skirmy face as in "audience don't believe this guy, he is lying", cut-in by the producers after-the-fact.
