How about this... Watch a loved one slowly wither away from painful and agressive cancer of the liver and colon, have a massive stroke in his last days, come down with pneumonia in the hospital, and stand there helpless knowing that he is in incredible pain and you're not able to do a damn thing about it.
THEN we'll see if you are against humane and painless assisted suicide.
I saw we just starve them to death instead of using drugs. We all know and have learned that being starved to death is a painless, wonderful, calm, and peaceful way to die.

THEN we'll see if you are against humane and painless assisted suicide.
Neither you nor your loved one have the guts to resolve this yourselves. You want a doctor to do it for you, lending some respectability to legalized killing.
With all due respect, my own mother died from cancer in a hospital, and she was given Morphine in her last days that not only took away her pain, but also her consciousness. I don't think there is a hospital in this country where patients must suffer pain without relief, even if it's relief to the point of Morphine-induced coma.
And I don't disagree with you that there are situations where people ought to have some choice in that... but don't abandon reality in search of a good argument. We saw that happen in TOC (that other case)

I watched my father die of lung cancer, literally. Did he suffer through the process? Yes. Was his pain managed appropriately by his physician? Yes. Am I against assisted suicide? Yes.
I'm for it for myself. The rest of you can do whatever you want. It's a free country.
