Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean met with Fernando Ferrer's mayoral campaign to jump-start his fund-raising yesterday, even as another blunder dogged the Bronx Democrat's campaign.
"We have a plan to increase the fund-raising and to be as helpful as we're allowed to be under the law," Dean said following a closed meeting with top campaign officials.
"It involves showing people around the country why it's important that Freddy Ferrer be the next mayor," Dean explained at a campaign event with Ferrer in Union Square. "Mayor Bloomberg has spent an enormous amount of time raising money for right-wing Republicans."
Dean declined to discuss details of the plan. His remarks came three days after Team Ferrer filed a report showing the campaign raised roughly $230,000 from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3, a disappointing showing for a Democratic mayoral nominee.
Bloomberg, who is financing his campaign from his $5 billion personal fortune, had spent $46.6 million as of last week.
Dean called the mayor's race a priority for the DNC but said the committee is legally barred from donating money directly to the campaign.
The national committee pledged to provide the state Democratic Committee with $1 million. Half of that has yet to be doled out.
Last night, Dean headlined the Ferrer campaign's first major fund-raiser at a restaurant in Chelsea - although there was confusion over his exact role. The invitation for the fund-raiser clearly lists Dean as the host, even though he said he was a guest.
"Join us to welcome Governor Howard Dean as he hosts a dinner in honor of Fernando Ferrer," the invitation reads.
Asked if it was illegal for him to be the host of the event, Dean replied, "Yes."
"I'm not hosting any fund-raisers," Dean said.
Lewis Cohen, a member of the campaign's finance committee who helped organize the event, said the language for the invitation came from the Ferrer campaign.
Jen Bluestein, a campaign spokeswoman, denied that the campaign was responsible for the blunder.
These people can't even organize a dinner..
Yes, Howard, please come to Alaska and convince me why this guy should be Mayor. Lets all invite Howard to empty his wallet convincing people who have no vote.
Ok RATS--who broke the law this time. Dean or Ferrer. and Don't tell us Karl Rove printed the invitations.
Sounds like the demo idiots couldn't organize a one car funeral....even their own!!
C'mon, Howard - name one. Bein' what as how Bloomberg is a left-wing democrat in everything but name only.
But I forget- to Howard, antbody to the right of Jos Stalin is some kind of rsbid, far-right wing Republican.
