KING COUNTY - King County Republicans are claiming more than 4,000 duplicate voter registrations have not been purged from the county's voter rolls. This could mean those voters could receive two ballots in the upcoming election.
But the county elections chief says the timing of the claim smells of pure politics.
The King County Republican party is claiming more than 4,000 voter registrations are duplicates and 414 of those are perfect matches, meaning the first, middle and last names, birth date, and address are exactly the same.
And for whatever reason, the duplicates are still part of the King County voter rolls.
King County councilman David Irons, who's running for county executive against incumbent Democrat Ron Sims, claims county Republicans didn't use rocket science to discover the duplicates.
"Dean Logan, why didn't you do the data search that quite frankly that any high school computer student will do," Irons wondered. "This is a computer search on a database."
Logan, the county's election chief, says the department has eliminated more than 9,000 duplicate registration and that purging duplicates is not an exact science.
"Essentially this is a witch hunt, trying to make this a top tier campaign issue," Logan said. "I've spoken repeatedly and passionately about the fact that we know we need to be on a path of continuous improvement."
Logan says the failure to divulge information about the duplicates, and doing so in an ambush style press conference, shows this is all politically motivated.
The Republicans plan to hand over what they found on Monday. Until then, Logan won't comment on the validity of the possible duplicates.

And we've already had some really tight races in the primary.
Not surprising.
We knew that.
Find a Democratic dominated county and find vast voter fraud. Why not, they have been allowed to get away with it since at least 1960.
Stuff like this makes me want to scream.
Wasn't that Judge Bridges a consummate jurist and didn't Chris Vance do a great job hiring defense attorney's? I'm impressed...not.
You King County FReepers are screwed.
In other news, FReeper ruralmajority made some news in the same paper concerning 12,000 signatures submitted by the bogus group who also calls themselves the rural majority wanting to keep your wonderful CAO. I'd bet $$$ the majority of signatures came from Seattle proper.
The "iron"y in all this: the very thing that may prove the difference between Irons' victory or defeat is the platform on which he is and must campaign. Ironic indeed...
The smell of "pure politics" that Mr. Logan is identifying doesn't come from the Republicans, but from his own underwear.
One would hope so. My concern is that his anti-I912 position will cause too many of his base to sit this one out, instead of contributing time, money and effort to elect somebody who can cripple the machine that runs King County -- and thus controls the state.
