Brent Shapiro, 1980–2005 - OD may have killed son of O.J.’s lawyer
LA WEEKLY ^ | 10/14/05 | CHRISTINE PELISEK

The 24-year old son of renowned defense attorney Robert Shapiro died Monday of an apparent drug overdose, authorities said.

Brent Edward Shapiro, a USC student on the dean’s list, had been partying with friends at a residence near the Hollywood Bowl after Saturday’s USC-Arizona football game. He became ill and was found in a comatose state at 7 a.m. Sunday. His friends called paramedics, who took him to Cedars-Sinai Hospital. At the hospital, Shapiro’s friends told emergency staff that he had taken the drug Ecstasy (also known as MDMA). He was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Blood tests at the hospital detected Ecstasy and methamphetamine. Ecstasy is a synthetic, psychoactive drug chemically similar to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. The Coroner’s Office will conduct toxicology tests, with results taking up to six weeks.

“Mr. Shapiro’s death was sudden and unexpected,” said Chief Craig Harvey of the county Coroner’s Office. “Because Mr. Shapiro’s death was apparently caused by the ingestion of a substance and it was not due to natural causes, it made it a coroner’s case.”

Robert Shapiro is most famous for being a member of O.J. Simpson’s dream team, along with Johnnie Cochran. Shapiro’s clients have included Jose Canseco, Johnny Carson, Christian Brando and F. Lee Bailey. Shapiro is also the author of the New York Times best-seller The Search for Justice.

Funeral services for Brent Shapiro were held Wednesday at Stephen S. Wise Temple in L.A., with interment at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary. In addition to his father, Shapiro is survived by his mother, Linell, and a brother, Grant.

Very sad. I always thought Shapiro was one of the few involved in the OJ defense with some dignity. He got out of the mess early!

So, if you're driving a car a little too fast, or skiing or hangliding it's ok to die because you chose to do the activity?

If you are driving a car 100mph at night on a winding road in a rainstorm, or if you are skiing off the path on the expert slopes during a fog or if you decide to try hanggliding out for the first time on a blustery day unaccompanied, yes.

The same thing goes for those who simultaneously take two dangerous illegal drugs that individually have killed thousands of people.

All four were just begging for trouble.

Losing a son is a horrible thing - I wonder if he stopped to reflect on Fred Goldman's plight as he cashed a murderer's paycheck.

Indeed. Everyone associated with that trial, on the defense side, treated the case as a career move. How well I remember Kim Goldman telling of the cruel smirk OJ threw the Goldman's way just after the verdict. A sad day for the Shapiro family to be sure. Irony is so ironic.

F. Lee Bailey was disbarred for laundering druglord money.

But he merits worse comeuppance than that.

Is this team getting cosmic payback for defending the slime OJ?

One can't help but ponder that. Meanwhile, like Old Man River, that smug, mean SOB Simpson just keeps on rolling along...

I read somewhere that the average college students completes their undergrad degree in five years, with six years not uncommon.

Doesn't take but ONE time.

I think kids should be more aware of the people who this happens to. They have such a 'won't happen to me' attitude. This boy woke up that morning thinking 'won't happen to me' too.

I mentioned elsewhere on the thread that I graduated six years after I started college. But I took time off because I needed money for tuition.

I don't think the son of a filthy rich defense attorney had the same concerns as 99% of the people on the 5 or 6 year plan.

Reminds me of a muzzie curse I heard not long ago "May Allah tear your head off and rip your spine out of your body and then put it back in and rip it out again over and over for a thousand years."

No biggie, I don't think less of folks who take time to make some money, or who have other episodes that require attention.

I think it's more common, though, that a lot of folks on the five or six year plan register for 4 classes per semester, end up dropping 1 or 2 consistently, and that extends their time in college.

I know dozens of guys and gals like this. This has nothing to do with money or special circumstance.

Problem: this "boy" was 24 years old -- an age when normally developing MEN have a solidifying sense of what is reckless and what is responsible. If this "boy" was a victim in any way, it was his being the son of rich, famous lawyer who probably shirked the responsibility of good parenting.

If you are driving a car 100 mph at night on a winding road in a rainstorm,

This is what my brother did. Drinking. What is there to say about that? Death wish, self-destructive behavior. Self-hatred. Selfish, self-centered, oblivious to the feelings of others, especially his son whom he purported to love. Course I always knew he had that sociopathic streak.

I suppose. Everybody is wise to him now though. I doubt there are very many people who would want to be him. I sure wouldn't.

Damn it man!

If I had my druthers I think I would have "pushed" Brent Shapiro. After all, the torso bit may be painful, but it's final. ;)

Prayers for the Shapiro family in their grief. A co-workers son died several years ago at the age of 19 from taking ecstasy.

This is so painful.

Don't you think there's an awareness that students are better prepared if they get some work under their belt before they graduate so they can make some money and demonstrate they have the basic suit up and show up skills?

I don't know, but I always did better at school if I was working too. Helped me structure my time. If I was going to school only I had too much free time and I would procrastinate and in the end things wouldn't get done.

When I worked, I had certain windows for studying that I had to hit, because they were the only time windows I had.

But then I dropped out for 5 years. I worked full time and went to school for a long time. I wasn't too good at school the first time around. "Behavioral issues" as the other poster said.

I'm very sorry to hear that. That's horrible. They never think about the ones they leave behind, do they?

My mother's best friend's son did something similar to her - cursed and fought with his mother, stole her car keys while she wasn't looking and then drunkenly hydroplaned into a tree at 75mph.

The poor, sweet woman very nearly lost her mind. She was in another world at the funeral. It was absolutely heartbreaking.
