I wonder if his recreational activities had anything to do with him being 24 and still in college.

Not necessarily. He was on the dean's list. The trend today is to encourage parents to start their children in school later, especially boys. I finished college at 24. I took a semester off to work and I switched majors half-way through that took me an extra year.

I returned to college when I was 22 after taking time off to work.

I read somewhere that the average college students completes their undergrad degree in five years, with six years not uncommon.
