I didn't say mediocre. I said average... meaning normal. I think we could fare very well with a normal person on the Supreme Court. A refreshing return to normalcy, not necessarily balance, could be healthy for America.
And who did we get in place of Carswell? A great conservative justice, I presume? What did you say? Harry Blackmun?
Well, that worked out wonderfully for us, didn't it?
Is that what we want now, throw out what might be a solid conservative vote and replace it with the kind of justice that gave us Roe V. Wade?
From Wikedia:
Carswell was rejected by the Senate on April 8, 1970 by a vote of 51-45. 17 Democrats and 28 Republicans voted for Carswell. 38 Democrats and 13 Republicans voted against Carswell. After this, Harry Blackmun was nominated by Nixon and confirmed by the Senate to fill the Fortas vacancy
"Even if he is mediocre, there are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers. They are entitled to representation, aren't they?"- Senator Roman Hruska in defense of Harold Carswell's 1971 SCOTUS nominaton.
Let's all come down off the cross, shall we? Carswell's nomination went down in flames ... replacement was Rehnquist
