There is a significant segment of the population that finds neither the Democrats nor the Republicans particularly appealing as a practical matter. This would include people with a more originalist small-"L" libertarian philosophy. Lacking any good choices, they split for both parties.

The fact is that both John Kerry and George Bush are big government nanny-state socialists of a different flavor. There were no good choices in the last election, and for a big chunk of the population that prefers minimalist government, it was minor matters of personal philosophy that made them tip one way or the other. I know a lot of Bush voters in 2000 that voted Kerry in 2004, not because they liked Kerry, but because Bush turned out to be a big government statist -- Kerry could hardly be much worse from that standpoint.
