My kids were potty trained by letting them know they'd get big boy/big girls underwear/panties and not have to wear a yucky diaper that gets poop all over your butt and pee that sits on your skin. They understood it was kind of gross so they wanted to learn. Both were trained by 2 years old.

That's pretty much how we handled it with my daughter -- we made a special trip, she picked out her Princess panties, and was told if she messed them, they'd get tossed, not cleaned.

She had ONE accident, ONE pair got thrown away, and she was good as gold ever after.
