Dick DeGuerin described such an effort in a letter to the prosecutor in the case, Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle.

DeLay has been indicted on conspiracy and money laundering charges in a Texas campaign finance investigation, both felonies. He was obligated to step aside under House Republican rules.

"Before the first indictment you tried to coerce a guilty plea from Tom DeLay for a misdemeanor

That's weird. Don't prosecutors typically entertain plea bargain discussions *after* an indictment?

The only explanation I can offer is that both the plea discussion and the indictment are political.

Typical. They try to settle rather than take a chance on the procedural outcome. It's not just for civil cases, and not just for corporations, but for political gain.

"In addition after his refusal, DeLay promptly gave the Texas prosecutor his middle finger."

These people are bottom feeders.

Who do they think they're fooling? They know darn well had DeLay would've pleaded guilty the media organs would've called DeLay to step down or resign.

That's right, and it would be a cheap victory.

If you are upset by the grotesquely unethical behavior of the notorious Ronnie Earle, send an ethics complaint to the Texas Bar Association demanding his disbarment.

Translation:

Earle: I ain't got jack on ya.

DeLay: I know.

Seems to me Ronnie Earle is purposefully interfering in the conduct of Congress. That's treason isn't it?

something is fishy here! Goebbles is proud of his Democrat sheep for repeating the lie often enough that it is 'their' truth.

The only explanation I can offer is that both the plea discussion and the indictment are political.

Some of the corporations involved in the same fact pattern paid off according to Ronnie Earle's terms, and were released from their indictments. I don't recall if that was termed a plea bargain - but it was, as you note, after the fact of the indictment.

DeLay filed a brief to quash the indictment based on prosecutorial misconduct.

I'm just waiting for Earl to come back with an indictment for DeLay playing golf with Hitler and divulging Valery Plame's name to Elvis on the 9th hole...outing her as a CIA operative.

No, it's not. It's reprehensible, scumsucking conduct that will hopefully backfire, but it's not treason.
