Your post about the elder Bushes still in love and weathering so many vissitudes of life together reminds me of the Irish poem, "John Anderson, My Jo (Sweetheart)"......."we clam the hill togither".

THE BUSH LEGACY
Monday, October 17, 2005 11:10 a.m. EDT
By James Taranto

Forget about Hurricane Katrina, the Valerie Plame kerfuffle, the federal deficit, even Harriet Miers. Forget about the things you've already forgotten about--Enron, Halliburton, the Texas Air National Guard, that kook who camped out in Crawford all those months ago. The reality is that President Bush's legacy will be judged on two things: whether America is successful in Iraq, and, if so, whether success in Iraq helps promote democracy and discourage terrorism elsewhere in the Arab and Muslim worlds.

If the former happens, history will recognize Bush as a near-great president; if the latter, as a great one. That's why Bush's foes in politics and in the media, here in America and overseas, have, with unseemly eagerness and impatience, embraced the idea that America is destined to fail in Iraq. And it is why they have to be feeling pretty blue after Saturday's successful constitutional referendum in Iraq.

THE IRAQI ELECTIONS
By Mark Noonan at 05:53 AM

Freedom and not servitude is the cure for anarchy. Edmund Burke, Second Speech on Conciliation with America, March 22, 1775

As I write this on Sunday evening, it appears certain that the Iraqi's, in a massive turn-out election, have approved their Constitution. The War on Terrorism still has a long way to go until victory, but the liberation of Iraq is, in the larger sense, complete. The chances of a political break-down have vanished and a completely legitimate Iraqi government will be able to proceed sternly against those who aid and abet the foreign terrorists who murder Iraqis.

Our leftwing friends have been telling us for months that Iraq is a complete failure - their theory being that be removing Saddam, we merely uncorked the bottle of difficulty and made Iraq an ungovernable mess. Two schools of leftwing thought emerged: leave Iraq immediately so that the terrorists (called "freedom fighters" by this part of the left) could re-impose a dictatorial regime or send ever more US troops so that we could attempt to control every square inch of Iraqi territory. Neither of these concepts took into consideration that free people with a genuine stake in their country will have a vested interest in peace...that freedom is the cure for anarchy, not tyranny.

President Bush and team have been much maligned for the plan in Iraq - in fact, a lot of critics have said there was no plan at all. But there has been, and President Bush has been courageous in carrying it out in spite of all criticisms. We're now reaping the reward of a fight for liberty - that being a free people on our side in the War on Terrorism.

Freedom is the cure.

HARRIET AND THE PUNDITS OF DOOM
October 17th, 2005

Most of the time modern liberals seem to think with their glands, while conservatives think with their brains. Until Harriet Miers, that is. In the last few weeks the roles have suddenly switched, and my favorite pundits are throwing the heaving vapors all over the carpet.

What’s going on? It seems that some people have turned against Harriet Miers before very many facts came out. Indeed, the biggest complaint on the Right seems to be that we can’t read her articles or opinions, so we must assume she is not qualified. If Miers hasn’t published, she must perish.

Can we all take a deep breath and calm down? Maybe we can find enough facts to make a reasoned choice.

Here are some.

THE BWAE
October 17, 2005 07:22 AM PST

In this morning's New York Times, Ramesh Ponnuru argues:

"CONSERVATIVES are conducting a bitter debate about President Bush's nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. Some see a divide between populists and elitists: they say that the conservative masses are gung-ho for the nomination, which is opposed only by Beltway insiders.

The truth is that the debate, like most political debates, is largely among elites."

No, it is not. In fact, it is elitist to refuse to acknowledge the deep seated convictions among Republicans, which are trending very heavily towards supporting the president. The debate is fierce at every level of the conservative movement and the GOP. But it ialso being won by the anti-anti-Miers people. Yesterday, Mike Gallagher, Michael Medved, Dennis Prager, and I appeared at a "townhall" event for many hundreds of people in the Los Angeles area (Big Lizards was there, and no, it wasn't a white lie), and much of the conversation among the attendees and some from the stage was about Miers. The toughest question from the audience was a detailed objection to Miers, for example, that pivoted off of her age. But my overall sense of the crowd was that the president deserves support on this nomination.

Similarly, the e-mails that are flowing in at an astonishing rate are from all over the country, the vast majority of them from folks who have never penned an op-ed. They are also divided, though the clear majority of my correspondents favor Miers. At this point, it may be that anti-Miers elites like Ramesh would like to keep the debate among elites because they are not winning it among GOP voters.

Jonah this morning posts my Wiki resume, and suggests that I too am an elitist, never realizing that an Ohio-born and raised Cleveland Indians and Browns fan cannot be an elitist. Further, my argument has been with the Bos-Wash Axis of Elitism, and not an argument about snobbery. Rather, it is an argument about who leads the conservative movement and the GOP. The president does, and as a result the Miers nomination will succeed despite obvious and sincere dissatisfaction along the BWAE.

SURVEY USA TRACKING POLL (just in case you prefer to view results from a scientific poll vs the current 'anti-Miers' FR poll):

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS ON HARRIET MIERS: Two weeks after President Bush nominated Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court of the United States, Conservatives and Republicans continue to tell SurveyUSA they have a favorable impression of Miers, at the same time a number of prominent Conservative Republicans lead the opposition to Miers. Democrats and Liberals continue to tell SurveyUSA that they have an unfavorable impression of Miers, at the same time those groups silently arbitrage whether the confirmation of a Justice Miers might be the best possible outcome they can expect from the hand they've been dealt. As of 10/17/05: 44% of Conservatives have a favorable impression of Miers, 12% unfavorable (a "Plus 32"). 16% of Liberals have a favorable impression, 39% unfavorable (a "Minus 23"). Miers is "Minus 9" Among Moderates, and "Minus 9" among Independents.

IT'S ALL BUSH'S FAULT . . .

MURDER RATE HITS 40-YEAR LOW
By MICHAEL J. SNIFFEN, Associated Press Writer
25 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The nation's murder rate declined last year for the first time in four years, dropping to the lowest level in 40 years. Experts said local rather than national trends were mostly responsible.

The rates for all seven major crimes were down and the overall violent crime rate reached a 30-year low, according to the FBI's annual compilation of crimes reported to the police.

How nice that so many came out to defend the President's choice of Miers. I don't think at this point if she makes "go Pat go" look like a liberal it will matter to those who are determined to undermine the President. I am totally disgusted with many in my party.

Pardon my rant! I will attempt to say a nice cheerful thank you snugs for taking the time to post this terrific thread for us! :-)

"How was the wedding?? We missed you around here!"

I missed you guys (DOSERS) as well -- although, I must admit that I didn't miss FR!!

Actually, the last 4 days have been quite instructive!

During this period, I interacted with over 300 'adults' from various demographic backgrounds AND NOT ONE PERSON MENTIONED HARRIET MIERS, confirming my hypothesis: The only people interested in this 'controversy' are conservative (mostly inside the beltway) elites!

In contrast, virtually everyone mentioned gas prices/the projected cost of natural gas this winter and some mentioned the Iraq vote. Interestingly, several noted their admiration for a President that keeps leading despite constant attacks and vitriole from the left/right and MSM -- Relative to the latter, even the most politically ignorant noted that the President can now lead as he deems appropriate given that he never has to stand for re-election again (they viewed this as a good thing)!!

Quite frankly, the wedding itself (obviously) and the key weekend football games garnered MUCH MORE INTEREST than any other topic -- WHAT A GREAT REALITY CHECK!!

GO BENGALS!!!

Very good analogy. Think about Barbara Bush, raising her children in an un-air conditioned shotgun house in Midland...and then through the years, the births of all the children, Robin's death, his appointment as Ambassador to China, then the VP and the White House...then private life, until their oldest son becomes governor and then President.

Quite a tale of steadfastness and loyalty, through bad times and good, and a love that overcame all things.

I will concur. I was with two of my sisters on Sunday and not one word about Harriet Miers. Big discussion about how high our heating bills will be this winter...and even my democrat sister didn't blame the President. Imagine that! I think I am making progress!

Yeah, I've been hanging out a lot with one of my few conservative friends here at school (and I'm going home with her for fall break!) and we've never once discussed Harriet Miers. We've discussed President Bush, we discussed the war, we discussed liberals...but Harriet Miers never came up.

Just wanted to give you a heads up on the new Gallup poll that the MSM will laud incessantly tomorrow! I just posted the following comments on another thread:

THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN GALLUP MANIPULATING ITS SAMPLING/WEIGHTING PROCEDURES IN AN ATTEMPT TO REPLICATE RESULTS FROM PEW AND AP.

That said, the following is the MONEY QUOTE FROM GALLUP'S POLLING SUMMARY:

"However, Bush's approval among his Republican base continues to hold steady. It was 85% in the previous poll and 84% now."
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2005-10-17-bushapproval_x.htm

[Note: The only way that Gallup managed to push the President's JA below 40 is to claim that only 8% of Democrats approve of the President's job performance -- HIGHLY IMPROBABLE!!]

RASMUSSEN REPORTS:
According to Rasmussen's tracking poll, the President's JA has CONSISTENTLY ranged between 43% and 48% this month -- with approval at the low end when weekend polling is included and approval at the high end when Saturday and Sunday 'roll out' of the results . . . By Thursday, the President's JA will return to the 46-48% range!!
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/Bush_Job_Approval.htm

BOTTOM LINE: Polls are nothing more than propaganda tools used by the MSM (which now owns ALL of the polling organizations except Rasmussen) to shape public opinion!!!
