Here's real terror, in a bird's eye
The Washington Times ^ | 10-18-05 | Wes Pruden

If the doom-criers are correct, as they well may be, the only thing the rest of us can do to prepare for the coming bird flu pandemic is to call a lawyer, not a doctor. The lawyer can draw up a will, and then we should all look for a cemetery plot. Here's a scenario more terrifying than anything from radical Islam, and the bulletins from Turkey, Romania and only yesterday from Macedonia tell of new infections of domestic chickens, ducks, and even swans. As long as the disease remains in birds, there's nothing to worry about unless you're Donald Duck or Mallard Fillmore. The strain is easily passed from bird to bird, not so easily passed from bird to human, and so far from human to human probably not at all. About 60 humans, most of them in Vietnam, have died.

A point I have been waiting to see in the media. Lost in all the sensationalism is the fact that the bird flu is a type of -- FLU! If you get it you don't automatically die!

Same thing with the West Nile virus scare. Sheesh, from the media reports one would think you if you were to get the West Nile virus that you would surely die in a matter of days!

Bah! The media and one more hysterically thing to fill the airwaves 24/7. By the way, what's the update on Natalie Holloway? /s

Not all flus are equal...duh!
Quick, what % of those who have contracted bird flu have died?
That is a very important number.

From what I have heard, this is a different type of virus that hits so quickly at the cellular level that one's immune system shuts down.

I will begin to freak when it jumps from human to human, but we all have to go sometime.

"Quick, what % of those who have contracted bird flu have died?"

Last I read, close to 50%. This was in rural areas where people had very frequent contact with the fowl who carry the virus, in many cases actually living in the same quarters with chickens, ducks, etcetera, and thes people had little to no access to health care of any kind. So, the 50% number is not going to be predictive outside of similarly unsanitary environments.

I believe projection for "first world" countries, should a pandemic occur, is on the order of 5%, but I'd have to do a little searching to be absolutely certain.

If marauders from the planet Mongu attack, and enslave us all, Bush will go down in history os the president who failed to protect us from interplanetary assault. He will go down in infamy, and deservedly so.

I'm not saying its going to happen, I'm just saying "if" it happens.

That is a very important number.

The death rate for these reported cases has been about 50 percent. CDC Link (see section titled "What is the risk to humans from the H5N1 virus in Asia)"
