OK.

I know nothing about golf.

Nothing.

The only birdie I know has two wings and eats worms.

And the eagle is our national symbol.

Bogie was a B & W movie star.

But I do know one thing.

This one thing.

100%, absolutely, no doubt about it.

This Bamberger guy....

Is a GD, MF A**hole.

No doubt about it.

A mathematical certainty.

A big, fat, MF A88hole.

I'm out.

I know the rules of golf are a great deal of what makes the game so great and honorable, but Bamberger is a jerk for doing this to Wie in her first tourney as a pro.

She was very gracious and understanding afterwards.

Here's wishing Bamberger sticks to writing, not being a severe flaming *sshole.

I figure my twelve inches could make me at least $53,000, but I would never give it a way for money.

What? I'm talking about my LP collection! What did you think I was talking about, you sicko?

Michelle Wie is revered here in Hawaii. If Bamberger comes to Hawaii, he should do so incognito. This is not a threat. Just a word to the wise.

I hope she learned another lesson. Don't EVER think those miserable pricks (and prickettes) in the media are your friends.

One George Bamberger, a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, thought he had seen a miscue of Wie's on the day before the tournament ended.

By the way..........

Michael Bamberger is a Senior Writer for Sports Illustrated, which he joined in September 1995. Previously he worked for nine years as a general assignment reporter and sportswriter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and before that wrote for the (Martha's) Vineyard Gazette.

George was a pitching coach for the Orioles.

...Bamberger, gifted with not only a writing ability but also the global positioning capacity of a satellite ...

So many were wishing the young lady well, a phenom for sure, but it is un seemingly odd that ONE "SPORTS ILLUSTRATED" bastard/reporter/spectator has it in for Wie. (24 hours after the fact?)

Here come the proper dutiful questions about Bamberger ... Why and what were his intentions? Xenophobic? Racial, from an Aryan look on Asians? Aged-based? Just to kick a puppy and see if the accused puppy pees on the media rug? This infantile Bamberger is a disgusting individual.

Does this smart-assed Bamberger follow Bill Clinton around and point out his amateur and bogus lies (pun intended)? No, he picks on an entry level LPGA golfer from Hawaii who could probably outshine his rubber-ass 370 days out of the year in many sports.

I'd bet Bamberger uses a magnification glass for the S.I. Swimsuit edition with one hand .... Excuse me, I have to go take a "Bamberger", or a "liberal", if you will ...

Wie

Michael Bamberger, A Name You’ll Remember

So it wasn’t a home viewer in this case.

The updated Associated Press wire states that it was Sports Illustrated reporter Michael Bamberger who informed tour officials about Michelle’s Saturday round drop. Johnston was bothered that Bamberger, who was at the seventh green when Wie took the drop, waited a day before raising it with tour officials. Had she been notified Saturday before signing her card, she would not have been disqualified.

Bamberger said he paced it off after Wie, playing in the final group Saturday, finished the hole.

“I did it in crude way — ‘Let’s see what she has to say.’ I was hopeful she could convince me,” in the Saturday interview, Bamberger said. “I thought about it more and was just uncomfortable that I knew something. Integrity is at the heart of the game. I don’t think she cheated. I think she was just hasty.”

Asked why he didn’t bring it up before the third round ended, Bamberger said, “That didn’t occur to me. I was still in my reporter’s mode. I wanted to talk to her first.”

Now there’s the ethical dilemma for you: Do you withhold information from your interviewee to get your story knowing that doing so could potentially disqualify your interviewee?

Wie accepted the decision: Rules are rules. She’s a class act.

I was intrigued to see the informant was Bamberger... I met him a number of years back, at a golf writers conference.

He's the author of an excellent narrative on golf, "To the Linksland"

http://www.caddybytes.com/To_The_Linksland.htm

There's a great chapter on his experience with John Stark, the former pro at Crieff GC in Scotland.

But to have waited a full day, or more, to report Wie's purported infraction was unfair at the least. He could have noted this to an official on Saturday and she wouldn't have been DQ'd...

I just clicked in here to see what this is about.

"You are not the story; you are the observer of the story. Write the story, don't become part of the story."

Journalism 101 - first day in class, they have you write this down in your notebook. First test, this is a major portion of it. Journalism Ethics - you spend weeks going over this simple set of statements, applying it to different events.

He broke the rule; he became part of the story. He affected the results of the game. If he had suspecions on what happened, that's what the column is for - not going to the judges and recreating the observation.

There's generally a word for those in journalism who do this - outcasts. He wants to interview Tiger? Whoops, that got assigned to someone else, or perhaps Tiger isn't available for the interview. Who wants a repeat performace? What if he pulls this at the Masters - suspecion that a ball was switched and a gain of two inches is made, perhaps.

I'm not sure of all the rules, but isn't the idea of the "drop" really an approximation to begin with? That is why they literaly DROP the ball, so that while the play is MORE favorable at an equal distance? If there was a requirement of precision, then there wouldn't be a DROP to begin with, and the DROP was done at the penalty of a single stroke?

I don't know but this is what we throughout the world familiar with guys like, whoever that nobody "reporter" without the imagination to fabricate stories about political figures, is call this particular action a "D@#$ Move"

"Michelle, Ma Belle (What a difference twelve inches can make -- say, $53,000!)"

She might be youthful and green to the game, but she is absolutely gorgeous and a hearthrob. After 18 years of marriage to a lovely wife, I can honestly say that seeing photos of the beautiful Miss Wie makes my heart palpitate.

Especially the photo below. [No, she's not blowing a kiss to me.]

Here's a couple more:

What absolute nonsense. Having played in USGA and PGA (PA. Golf Association) sanctioned tournaments I find the Rules of Golf to be antiquated, arcane, and almost impossible to understand or adhere to.

But before commenting further, let's assume that I am watching a Bear-Packers game on TV and happen to see a tackle line up in the neutral zone on a TD play that won the game, and no penalty is called. I immediately get on the phone with the NFL office in New York and testify that the Packers clearly cheated on the play and that the officials should review the tape and the Packers should be disqualified.

Of course it's ridiculous. No fan or "outside observer" in any capacity should be able to demand or instigate a DQ. To do so would lead to total chaos.

In a golf match (stroke play or match play) the only people who should be allowed to call a penalty on a golfer should be the player themselves, their fellow competitor.

Now let's take a look at the rules. If you think you KNOW the rules of golf I suggest you go to the USGA website and take the rules quiz they have made available. You can even take it at different skill levels???? Try reading between the lines here.

The rules are so complicated that even the USGA gives you simple questions, unless you'd like to try solving one where a wild animal eats your ball and disappears down a hole. I defy anyone on these pages to consistently answer EVERY rules question correctly. It is impossible.

I play with a professional friend who served as a rules official for the Ryder Cup. He says it was the hardest job he ever performed in golf. But let's take a look at how the rules are written.

Several golf writers during the past year have written tongue-in-cheek articles about the rules, primarily making fun of the term "The Committee". If you don't know who "The Committee" is just start reading the rules and the the Local Rules addendum, and you'll also be wondering who this mysterious amorphous body is.

Let's take a look at some of the strange inconsistencies of the rules. Let's take Match play. The rules of golf clearly state that the "hole" is not completed until the ball is "holed." Except lo and behold, if you're feeling generous in Match play you can "give" that 3 footer to your pal to make him feel better. That's right, he can just pick up his ball off the green and the hole is over. But wait a minute, you can't just pick your ball up off the green or through-the-green except under the Rules of Golf!

So the USGA says you need to hole your putt to complete the hole being played, but, hey, we'll just call it Match play and you can give those gimmee's to your pals so they won't think less of you for making them putt out!

Hit in a a yellow staked H2O hazard and you can go back as far as you like to replay the shot. But now a red staked LH2O, well, we'll give you two club lengths. Now technically, you are supposed to the club that you would replay the shot with for measuring, but everyone grabs the driver because of it's length and there they go.

Talk about arcane. Spike marks. Not so much a problem today but for a long time they deflected many a putt. Oh you can fix a ball mark or remove leaf litter etc, but don't you dare touch a tiny spike mark.

My point is not that Wie should have been given a break. My point is that many of the rules are based on "Centuries Old" nonsense that has has been written in although for the life of them, I'm sure many golfers can't figure out why.

No the point is that they will bend on golf balls, shafts, club head design, etc., but not the complexity and stupidity of rules that have been around so long their musty and need to be changed.

How many of you know that you are not responsible for totaling your score??? You are actually told NOT to tally your score. "The Committee" does that for you. You are only responsible for indicating the "correct" score for each hole.

The other maidens is that you are the "Marker" for your fellow competitor. You are supposed to keep both his score and yours. That's why they have the tear-away strip on the cards so you can review what he has indicated for you. My professional tells me it is bad form to ask your fellow competitor what score he made. You're supposed to watch his every shot and add in any penalties he might have incurred, all the time trying to concentrate on your own game and score.

If golf is such a game of "HONOR" then why do we have to keep the other guy's score??? Isn't he supposed to be honest and play by the rules?????

My final point is that by allowing a casual observer to call penalties (in any sport) in golf is insane. Someone should have Bamberger take the USGA rules quiz at the EXPERT LEVEL and see if he can score 100%. If not, he should shut up and get off the course. After all, irate golfers have been known to throw clubs!!!!!!!!!!!
