Administration Does 180 on Illegal Aliens
Rushlimbaugh.com ^ | 10/18/2005 | Rush Limbaugh

RUSH: (story) "Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said his department aims without exception to expel all those who enter the United States illegally. "Our goal at DHS (Homeland Security) is to completely eliminate the 'catch and release' enforcement problem, and return every single illegal entrant, no exceptions. 'It should be possible to achieve significant and measurable progress to this end in less than a year,' Chertoff told a Senate hearing. Thousands of 'Mexicans who are caught entering the United States illegally are returned immediately to Mexico. But other parts of the system have nearly collapsed under the weight of numbers. The problem is especially severe for non-Mexicans apprehended at the southwest border,' Chertoff explained. 'Today, a non-Mexican illegal immigrant caught trying to enter the United States across the southwest border has an 80 percent chance of being released immediately because we lack the holding facilities,' he added." We need more Club G'itmos. "'Through a comprehensive approach, we are moving to end this 'catch and release' style of border enforcement by reengineering our detention and removal process.' Chertoff's remarks in favor of returning 'every illegal entrant, no exceptions' appeared to conflict directly with the US policy toward illegal Cuban migrants. Though Cubans picked up at sea are returned to their country, those who reach US soil by air, sea or ground are allowed to stay and work -- a fact Cuba says encourages dangerous illegal emigration attempts."

Now, does anybody have any questions as to why this sudden 180 reversal in policy? I think some of you might call it the conservative split. Some of you might call it the fallout from the disappointment among conservatives over the Harriet Miers nomination. Could well be. But regardless, this is long overdue, and I'm telling you, this is the issue, folks. And I've got a couple stories here in the stack about how serious this has gotten out in California now. Well, that's the wrong way to put it. It's been serious -- about how finally political officials, elected officials in California now realize just how serious an issue this is. So this is a remarkable departure from stated policy from Washington. Plaudits to Mr. Chertoff, the homeland security secretary, and we'll see how successful the efforts are. But we've reached a breaking point on this. And there's no doubt in my mind that there is a political component to this as well. But, see, this is how this stuff works, folks. I mean, you keep applying pressure and standing up for what you believe, and eventually, if you're forceful enough about it and you can generate enough numbers of people on your side, you can force action on these kinds of things. It's actually another reason to be optimistic.

I would not say a 180. In order to do a 180, they will have to back up their rhetoric.

I agree. Hopefully, they'll do something to back up their words.

Well... just from what I've read, seen and heard, the posture isn't exactly a "180." The same rhetoric and plan is in place as has been all along. Bush is still talking about his "guest-worker" initiative and the "expelling" of illegals is merely his plan to give them all cards so that none of them will be "illegal." Chertoff yacking about expelling illegals probably entails the same damn thing. Bush is simply not going to let this plan go. It's clear as crystal.

And I've got a couple stories here in the stack about how serious this has gotten out in California now.

I guess ol Rusho never sees the weekly stories on the dozens of people that have entered the country illegally, that are routinly found all over this country wandering around our Air Force bases, nuclear facilities, nuclear submarine ports, etc etc, while no one is ever held accountable.

It was serious in Cal 10 years ago Rushbo. And now it's serious everywhere else.

Cutting edge eh Rushbo?

Until there's an actual attempt to stop the flood of illegals, Chertoff's talk is worthless. The vast majority of Americans want action.

Do you really think this will happen? If it does, and it is followed through faithfully, thank all FReepers and pro-active conservative bloggers and the like! Our voice will have been heard once again!!!

Do you really think???????

I will believe it when the ICE vans pull into my neighborhood and pick up whole families of illegals and take them out of here.

And drop the crime rate 30% in the process.

The executive director of FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) was on local conservative talk radio yesterday saying that he had monitored the Chertoff testimony closely and FAIR believes that Chertoff gave the old pig of guest worker amnesty a makeover. The term "guest" worker is now "temporary worker" and the administration plans to allow illegals to stay for six years and then leave--after they have children who are born as American citizens? Yeah right!

Agreed. Aside from other factors, like maybe lowered polls and a sense of self-survival in advance of the 2006 elections, the congressmen and senators have likely heard from their constituents on recess and THAT's why they are at odds with Bush on this issue now. Several stories this past week indicate that they are going to address security and enforcement FIRST, as it should be, before talking to Bush about his "come get your free card" program. Whatcha wanna bet that the bill they come up with is the first one Bush ever vetoes?

yep. I wont be convinced until I see illegals being carted back to mexico by the bus loads. And when I see immigration officials busting down doors of businesses employing illegals and the owner of the business being led away in hand cuffs. And when I see programs setup to give illegals free money ended.

Yes, as I read more about this, it appears it's not so much a flip flop as it is a two-faced lie.
