Senators (Specter & Leahy) Say Miers' Answers Insufficient ("incomplete to insulting")

The senators in charge of Harriet Miers' confirmation are demanding more information from her before hearings begin, one describing the Supreme Court nominee's answers so far as "incomplete to insulting."

Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and senior Democrat Patrick Leahy of Vermont agreed Wednesday to begin Miers' hearings on Nov. 7, but also jointly sent a letter to the White House counsel asking her to more fully answer a questionnaire she turned in Tuesday.

The two senators also plan to ask the White House to provide information about Miers' work for President Bush, something the White House has said previously it will not do. "A number of Republicans have asked for non-privileged information," Specter said at a news conference.

Miers returned a 57-page questionnaire to the Senate answering questions about her legal career and background and such issues as how she would deal with court cases involving the Bush administration if confirmed as the replacement for retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

Specter and Leahy said both Republicans and Democrats on the committee felt she did not tell them enough.

"The comments I have heard range from incomplete to insulting," Leahy said.

"Senator Leahy and I took a look at it and agreed that it was insufficient," Specter said.

Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino said the White House appreciated the timing of the hearings, had received the senators' letter and would respond soon.

Perino said of Miers: "From the first day when she was nominated, she told Senator Specter that she had years of files to go through and she would work to finish the questionnaire as soon as possible, but she would likely have to send follow-ups to provide additional information."

The senators said an official request for "non-privileged" information from the White House would come after they saw Miers' response to their new questions.

Leahy insulted? Frankly, I consider this a plus for Miers.

"The senators said an official request for "non-privileged" information from the White House would come after they saw Miers' response to their new questions."

This isn't 'additional information to complete the questionaire'.

These are additional QUESTIONS!

They didn't like her answers, so let's just move the bar a bit until 'we hear what we want'.

Spectre is a POS and should have never been put in charge of this Committee.

Leahy would say this if she were the second coming of John Roberts. It's not the pick that matters, it's what she could potentially do to balance of the court.

She will be ripped to shreds, and so would've been any other nominee who even hinted at a Roe reversal. I think the conservatives will get that battle so many of them seem to crave. I actually respect anyone who is willing to take the arrows Ms. Miers is about to take. I predict brutal treatment in the hearings.

And if you think that's bad, wait and see what happens if Dubya gets another pick. It will be armageddon in the Senate.

I think that may be the underlying reason for the media frenzy over Plame. Weaken the President, and thus his subsequent nominees.

I hear that if Miers is defeated, then GWB plans to nominate Hillary for SCOTUS.

I can just hear a lot of folks cooing now about how this Bush/Rove secret plan has really screwed the Dems b/c now they lost their frontrunner for 2008! After all, GWB plays checker not chess...oh, wait, I think I got that backwards. At any rate, with Hillary on SCOTUS the Dems are really, really screwed! What a bunch of geniuses they are!

w00t! We can expect her to overturn Roe v. Wade right away! After all, those limp-wristed judges made abortion optional--the only constitutional decision would be to make it mandatory!

As bad as my socialist senators are this is a poignant reminder that I could do worse and be more embarrassed of my state than I already am.

I admit it. Sometimes I get a kick out of Specter's love of throwing rocks at Bush. Bush deserves it for getting the s.o.b. re-elected.

AMAZING! Two of the exact same words I would use to descibe Senator Patrick Leahy!

What a coincidence!!!

I agree. Specter, the author of the 'magic bullet' theory, is a head case who was on the ropes when Dubya put party ahead of principle and worked for his reelection. When you sleep with dogs you get fleas.
