The Katrina issue - which for the most part was an improper evacuation State issue - and the sudden expense of gas must be playing a role with the numbers.
On the political front I think he has lost some of his base for the short term due to not nominating someone a significant portion of the right would have liked.

Maybe the fact that we are in the middle of an all out shooting war with an enemy determined to deploy WMD and we don't control our borders, has something to do with it. Think about it, Iraq has better border security than the richest nation on earth. If that ain't a signal that the country is heading in the wrong direction I don't what is.
