But the conservative political consultant said that he had received such a query from Sara Taylor, director of the Office of White House Political Affairs. Miss Taylor denied making any such calls. A second Republican, who is the leader of a conservative interest group and has ties to the White House, confirmed that calls are being made.

What we can tell is that the political gamesters are out in force. Nominations have been withdrawn and nominees have withdrawn themselves in the past and I don't remember the house burning down.

Well gee a named source is denying it and an unnamed source is confirming it.

I will go with the named source, thank you very much.

So we have two unnamed sources. Sounds like the NY Slimes to me. Amazing that when "conservatives" write these kinds of articles, they are accepted as gospel, but when the WaPo or Slimes does it, we rightly question why no sources are given. For all we know, these are anti-Miers conservatives (of whom there are plenty) trying to "create" reality.

As I posted in a vanity some weeks ago, conservative opposition to Miers had reached "critical mass" and she would eventually have to withdraw.

Since then, two things have happened; as if to match the tidbits of her record that showed her "going along to get along" policy of dealing with liberals on the Dallas City Council, papers came out showing that in 1989 she opposed abortion - this time giving the liberals ammunition;

since neither side is willing to take a chance with her, and adding to that her reportedly lackluster performance with Senators so far, her odds of being confirmed are dropping darn near zero.
