"The point is that this nomination is extremely important, because if Miers turns out to be moderate to liberal leaning, the next president is a Democrat and she will replace the next retiring judge or two with leftist liberals, we will have a leftist liberal court for the next 50 years. We cannot afford the gamble."

I wonder if we could count on more than three Republican senators opposing voting against confirmation this time, i.e. more than voted against Ruth Bader Ginsberg?

The point is that Republican Senators shouldn't be put in a position to have to vote against President Bush's nominee. That would be a disaster. That's why it's important that Miers withdraw at the suggestion (behind the scenes) of President Bush.
